Hi fellas,
I'm planning to get hold of an airbrush and compressor kit in the new year to give my lures a decent paint job for once and really didn't want to waste my money on trialling different airbrushes and compressors, I really wanted to know what you guys use and how you rate them i.e would you get the next model up? Different brand? Or just get a cheapy?
Thanks in advance, Poolie.

I'm in the same vote too.
Somehow the nail polish and markers just aren't cutting it. I'm not game on trial and error, so the onlt thing stopping me is knowing what to buy. Living in an apartment with no garage or shed might be a problem too, but nothing that can't be solved with some out of the box thinking! |

Hi, I'm no airbrush expert like some of the others, but I've got by with el cheapo from supercheap auto. Other outlets have them. should only be in the $20 plus mark. I'm not into fine delicate lines and scale effect, but quite ok for shadings. The paint is the dear bit, use thinner based auto acrylics, 1 litre is the smallest you can buy, unless you have a spraypainter mate. Propellant to drive it all, air, you can hook up to a spare tyre, but you've always got to keep getting it pumped up. I use a 240v air compressor, there are a heap of chinese ones out there that work well, for not a lot of dollars. Again if you are into the real delicate stuff, a water trap is needed. All the above boils down to work space, even a airbrush sends out a lot of thinners and paint dust, and a compressor clanking away is not all that pleasant in a small area.

A good double action airbrush will cost a bit more but may be worth it in the long run if you make a few lures. Make sure replacement parts are readily available, some paints can be abrasive on needles and nozzles. Paasche make some good ones.

i run an an old puma compressor that i bought from glenfords 26years ago its a bit big but it doesnt have to pump up as often as the smaller ones.but cheapie compressors you see at supercheap and
the like are exceptional value for money and do the job no worries .ive a few airbrushes a single action badger copy that i bought from supercheap ,a doubleaction no name i bought off fleabay
and an aztec contempo for fine work(i dont like it though,it works well but its made of plastic).
cheap airbrushes are a bit hit and miss though and theres always a chance you could buy a dud as i have twice.the paasche airbrushes that Gary mentioned have been around forever and are very good and not too pricey

Thanks for the insight fellas and the other thread too thanks Darby, I found an old compressor in the old mans shed that isn't being used so I'll snatch that. I want to do some really fine stuff and obviously shoot through primers as well, so it looks like a dual action gravity feed type kit will get the nod, I found this flash one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270772725014?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 I'm pretty fond of it and the 3 tips look like a great advantage although I'll need to get a hose too but they're pretty cheap less than $20, thanks again for all your help Poolie.

Not sure it will do primers real well Poolie.
should be good for your fine line work though. I just laid down some $$ on one of those mini touch up guns with a 1.4mm tip, I want to use it purely for primers/Undercoats. Brad |

The bigger tip 3/64" is equal to 1.19mm I thought that would be big enough for the primer/undercoat. Some other comments I've read tend to lean toward getting a separate gun for primers mmmmmm.... something to mull over I don't want to rush in until I'm sure.

Poolie- some of the 'spot guns' that you can get at 'Super Cheap Auto' work ok ($50)-also some of the FleaBay airbrush sellers sell small overhead spot guns at a areasonable price (about $50), nice to use too--look up eBay seller -"Princess Trade".

yeah i would'nt use that nice looking airbrush for undercoat Poolie as Pete said a second gravity feed touch up gun would be the go.if your lures arent too big you could consider dipping them in a
jar of lightly thinned undercoat? ,

One of these is what I use , http://www.hobbyserv.com.au/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=58
This is great for Primer / colour base coat as well as clear . I also use it to do the stencil work as well AND I CAN (yes , CAN) get O rings for it !!!! Unless you are going to be doing fancy freehand/mural work , I cant see the need for airbrushes that cost hundreds of dollars |

All good advice aside, I have paasche VL Airbrushes that have lasted me nearly 20 years. Cheap to get parts for and I still use them every day. I make larger pots out of cream cheese jars to handle the volumes of paint I spray. Touch up guns are handy for undercoat and clear if you plan on doing quantities as they are a little easier on the fingers. For me the money spent has been well worth it

Ok, after taking everyones posts into consideration and researching a bit the flow pencil seems to be a pain in the backside as it seems to clog easily so that will be a no-go I do like the idea of the Paasche Talon with the 3 tips http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280728671821?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 and maybe the Iwata ninja http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270774941054?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 or the imax compressor http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/250867082579?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 I did find this cheap kit http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/180730181264?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 but I think if I get the Paasche and either of the other compressors I will be more confident in their ability to be consistant and think I might try dipping the undercoat like puglee has said I know Powelly does it and his paint jobs all look good.
Has anyone used either of these compressors before and are there any problems I will encounter with them? Obvious differences are price ($180-$99), max PSI delivery (30-60)and dB reading (40-47) which would you get and why? Sorry for all the questions I'm just getting more confused the deeper I look into this LOL.
Thanks again Poolie.

always go bigger than you think you need with a compresser, it wont have to work as hard and small compressers without tanks may not deliver smooth airflow for repetitive spraying. The tank also allows some ( but not all) water to condense out of the compressed air before spraying. Compressors can be silenced in a box lined with carpet or other accoustic deadening material. |

David ,
There are a zillion airbrushes out there from $10 to $500.
l have owned and used 3 different types of airbrush. Single Action Syphon , Double Action Syphon , and Double action Gravity Feed.
Personally , l like the single action syphon airbrushes. Heres why:
Pro's:
1. very easy to clean and clean quickly [simply rinse with thinnners.... 10seconds]
2.very easy to get parts
3. very simple and rapid colour changes. simple rinse between colours and away you go again.
4.no microscopic washers or needle fine parts to worry about losing or damaging.
5.Single action....just depress the trigger.....
6. even the high quality airbrushes are affordable.
7. simple nozzle exchange and clean up.
8. Easily attach several different size paint pots...some are very large [200ml?] and are good for heavy paint/clear application.
9. no cleaning of little paint pots .
10. Paint jars hold more paint and dont need regular cleaning. simply put the lid back on.
Con's:
1. cant do very fine work [double action airbrushes are best for this type of work].
Buy the best 'quiet' compressor you can afford. There are some good ones on Evilbay. search "price highest first" and check out the first two pages. go for 'name' and known brands. lwata , Paasche , etc etc.
l hope this helps...
Barney.

Thanks for the in put Barney, I know what you mean about clears and undercoats the Talon has clogged a couple of times on me now just on the colours, running the others through it would be a pain. I may get a cheap syphon for the clear and undercoat. I'm glad I got the duel action gravity feed it's wicked below is my first finished lure using it and I'm learning something new each time I press the trigger, a good gun for fine detail is what I really wanted and it looks like I've got it. My old mans compressor does a great job too I can adjust it to the pressure I want and it keeps filling the tank automaticly so I have a continuos and consistant flow, thanks again for everyones advice without it I would be still lost :)
