I have an original copy of The Fisheries of NSW,issued by the dept of intelligence and govt tourist bureau.
It is dated october 1907. Inside the cover is a full page add for Mick Simmons sporting goods, haymarket sydney. It old, and the cover is scrappy,,but it is in pretty good nick, heaps of great pics of coastal towns of the time, and fantastic info on how to get there, eg,to get to camden haven, catch a steamerfrom sydney to taree, manning river, thence by coach. Lawful size of fish,1907. estuary perch...9 inches common flathead....13 inches black bream....9 inches fresh water Aust greyling 9 inches maquarie perch 9 inches murray cod 15 inches these are just a few examples, other info is about hiring boats f/rom the oyster men. there is some info on artificial baits, nearly all the coast is covered, and all inland NSW water ways. Back page is an add for Anthony Hordern and Sons, everything is sold. 68 pages in total. Any body seen one before, or have any idea of its worth?

If it still contains the 3 folded maps then it could make around 100 dollars at a good auction (the damaged
covers lower it a bit) but would probably make less than that on eBay.
Cheers,Jim

Probably the last time a Department of Intelligence managed fisheries in NSW!!!???
Ironically I used that and some of David Stead's books when I re-introduced some of the saize limits and closed seasons that were in place back when Noah was a boy. |

Funny story about grayling.
Only a half a dozen fly anglers actually fished for them, and let them all go, although the scales come off easily.
I made them a protected species in about 1990. It then meant that all the logging in the SE needed a full EIS to proceed and I like toi think that I helped to save huge amounts of bass habitat. But I (and some really good people like Jenny Burchmore) couldn't get anyone to do anything about bass because they were 'common'.
It stayed like that for about a decade until NSW Fisheries went and did a study on grayling - found they were in really shape and there were big numbers in many waters - including the Shoalhaven below Tallowa.
So you can find them at 9-11" in old fart speak in a number of waters in NSW from probably the Shoalhaven south.
And the bass habitat lost an unlikely ally in the staus of the grayling.......

Think I recall an Article by Starlo in thr late 80,s or early 90,s on greyling in that area.
Nice work by you to help those areas. I love those old books, esspecially the old pics. The 1907 style books that is, not the 80,s Starlo ones!

Could you put a picture up of a grayling, is it freshwater fish.
We had a fairly rare fresh water fish in the Smithton river (Tassie) that I believed was referred to as a grayling, unusual scales, (rough) normally caught on worms, we always let them go if practicable. This was around early 60,s not sure if they are still about now. regards John

Isn't the Aust grayling a close relative of the NZ grayling - the only true salmonoids found in these 2 countries?
