Small jitterbug / crawler types for the surface.
Shallow rivers diving -small natural colours diving to about half a metre
Deep rivers diving - same but dives to about 1-1.5 metres
Dams- same but I try all depths until I find them.

Don't really use spinnerbaits for bass, but if I do it's a very small one as in a beetle spin.

Softies - very small single tails in a dark colour  on a small black jig head over shallow, rocky rapids.

My favourite bass lures are Crankbaits - black/purple for clear water and natural colours (brown/silver) for later in the day.

Jackall TN60 lipless crankbaits are dynamite for the dams although a bit heavy for small creeks.

I prefer poppers for the surface. Black if possible.

I've used a lot of different brand spinnerbaits and they all are good as one another.

Soft Plastics bore me to tears. I'm sure they work but i have to be pretty desperate to tie on one.

When I first fished for Bass in 1970 in the Hunter/Williams rivers, the Flopy was the "go to" lure. Adjustable bib to get down to the depth where the fish were. Celtas in the flowing water and Jitterbugs after dark. Moving back to QLD in the summer of '72. the Noosa River was "the place"!! Unfortunately, the same system didn't work as well, and we had to change our techniques for the tannin stained water. Most successful lure was the 3" Nilsy in chocolate colour for shallow water work or low light. High sun saw deeper lures such as black Hellbenders more efficient, then at night the Heddon black Tiny Torpedo was the go...

My favourite lure for Bass fishing. My own small guppy shaped wake baits. Cast like a bullet, allows you to explore over shallow timber at the back of the snag (gotta hookem them before worrying about getting them to youWink) and you get the visual strike of a surface lure but with more the hookup of a diver ( I believe this is because they are already under the water, even by a mm and makes it easier to get in their gob)

My most successful bass lure is a yellow/orange/brown Kokoda G-Vibe. Nick named the yella devil. Don't know why cause it looks nothing like a natural food source but it has worked constantly over all others for years in the rivers of the north coast. I hope they never stop making them and that colour as I have gone through heaps over this time.
Alistair.

For deep dam trolling the go to lure growing up was a Little Ripper in bronze & silver.
Never came home with a donut with it tied on.

Beetle spins for creek and river fishing before a spinnerbait was tried.

And if all else failed, tie on a HL Black TN60 Jackall.

Just my 2 cents anyhow.
Cheers,

Troy

My first couple of picks would be a black jointed jitterbug followed by a heddon crazy crawler black and white. Some of the stuff you can now by from japan is mind blowing. My go to crankbait would have to be a jakal chubby and don't get me started on spinnerbaits they are my go to lure when the going gets tough...Wink
