"Copy Lathe Mk3" An 'Auto Combobulator' with a 'Verticator --- Just thought I would show you this, I know there are people out there that need/ want to build something like this. I's made out of ply (good ply) , so there is no welding anywhere - But I'm just warning you, this one has probably taken up about 6 months of my miserable life-- Every week has a new problem and each problem takes another week to solve, so here I am just trying to show you what is possible. I made two of these last year, after about three months I scrapped the first one because it wasn't rigid enough and the "geometry" was nowhere near up to scratch, because I drew it up in my head, I then started this one, on paper and spent some $'s. It's all 12 Volt except for the bed drive which I have cranked up to 18V- It measures 700 W x 350 D x 300 H, so you can chuck it in the boot and take it away with you, just a set of jumper leads and a stick of wood and you are away. It has 'auto feed' so you just push a 1.8m stick in, have a beer/ coffee and about an hour later, there are about 13 x 6cm or 11 x 8cm lure blanks , it also has a cutting tool 'verticator' @@ which keeps the cutter always vertical and over centre, this makes for smoother cut (less sanding). A nagging problem with most of these I have seen is the cutter either moves back and forward (off centre) or side to side, sometimes both, so you get a 'raggy finish'--not saying this is anywhere near perfect though!!!!!!!!! yet. Still has a few bits that need tweaking . Pete Pic's show 6cm cut blanks ( first pic a bit blurry, it's running). |

Thanks again for your comments- after spending so much time on this, I'm wondering what to do now---fishing maybe??
Bill not sure which bit you mean, but if it's the round 'honeycomb' thing in front of the 'Mincota O/B', no it's not the 'auto feed', that is a 'heat sink' I found in one of my crashed desk top computers, I stuck it on top of the carriage motor to get rid of some of the built up heat--Never throw anything mechanical away mate . Jas not really mate, lots of similar machines around the only thing different here is the 'square chuck'. The motors (4) are scavenged from a laminator, a printer, a car door, and a car heater A/C box-- And 5 micro switches mainly scavenged from printers. I had to buy 6 roller bearings and 4 'linear bearings' with 2 hard steel shafts ( CNC parts ), all other bearings (9) were scavenged from old 12v cordless drills (Ryobi, Makita mainly) which had real gearboxes, unlike the new planetary ones--In these old drills there are a lot of 10mm shafts, bearings, a chuck and gears which came in very handy, the bearings are a very standard size so new replacement ones are very cheap. The 10mm shafts were real handy too (used about 5)- the hardened gears can be combined to get all sorts of speeds (used about 6 of these). So all in all, discounting TIME it was pretty reasonable $ wise to build. Oh yeah, also had to buy a recycled 110Ah GSM battery ($40) a Variable D.C supply (0-24 volt) to control the bed speed ($130), a box and switches ($25). Thanks again for your comments---- now get to it and make one. Pete |

Surprised you haven't used any microcontrollers or similar. Will take programming, but might reduce some of the hardware complexity |

Pete I've looked through this thread a few times now and I'm still in awe. I also found out recently that you used to work the same job I'm in at the moment and that I had actually met you up at Jindabyne a couple of years ago with mutual work colleagues. I would love to catch up one day for a beer and see some of your creations.
Cheers, Danny. |

Never throw anything out. I made this painting jig from stuff in the scrap heap
It's not by chance it looks like a large rotary fly tying vise as I'm an avid fly tyer too. I don't use it much to do base coats but it's really good when doing details and stencilling |

I have been upgrading my dust collector, bought a commercial dust extractor, built a ''Thien Dust Separator'' (very simple o make), then added my water mister on the end to catch the really fine stuff (3-5%).
Works great and much more compact but a little bit more noisy than the old one, BUT moves about 4 time as much air/dust. |

Jas, sanding about 50 x 7cm at the moment, gee I love it , if only we could sand all day instead of painting and finishing. Will post some up when they are finished. Pete |

Ok was sick and tired of using either rubber bands or clamps to hold mesh in place on lures as it was forever twisting, stretching into all different shapes, so decided to make these up yesterday.
Works a treat - Mesh sits snug to lure without any distortion, and I can place 4 or 5 lures in the one section and then just depress trigger on airgun and do the sides of 5 lures in one continuos stroke, turn it around and repeat. Just used some spare angle supports from those cheapo bunning shelves and hot melt glued some material to them to help grab the mesh and avoid scratching the paint on the lures. Just fold mesh over in half, put through middle of rails, and can manoeuvre mesh and lure around at your leisure before final tightening of the rails - Yep basic but damn it made it a lot easier. AS you can see by the last image, you can get the mesh to follow the curvature of the lure nicely, without any distortion. As I said, basic but effective. Cheers Steve |
