I have just watched this video, the gentleman who makes these videos is an Engineer and he looks at lure making in a whole new light, I hope you can get some information from the video plus check out his other work as well.

Worth a Look, pleased to see the acknowledgment of the shock taken by rod line and drag before recognizing the load on the eye or split ring

And that is exactly why you don’t need to go overboard with the strength/ size of the hooks. If you have everything set up properly then most of the time upgrading the hooks can be a waste of money or change the action away from the original intent

Little of topic but I`m not sure I would agree with being content with hooks
First Rule is always expect the unexpected!
We have all heard the tales of the one that got away and the size of it so I will not spend a lot of time on this.
2 years ago at Exmouth WA in my sons boat, No gaff only a net. I hooked the biggest Spanish Mackerel I have ever seen, other than Black and White old photographs with them usually hanging in a tree.
This thing had me in goose pimples when I first seen it going through a wave some 3 minutes before I got it to the boat, to say I was excited is an understatement.
Got it to the boat head only in the net, I estimate it to be between 1.6 to 1.8 long and its sides would have been between 250mm and 300 mm wide big fish
Backed the drag of and stepped around my son who had netted the head so as I could grab the tail.
Fish gave 1 hell of a head toss rolled and flicked and straightened the single hook that held it
I watched it swim away in disbelief with only this story to show for it and the experience and belief that what ever you use, make sure it is able to accept a bit more than anticipated .

I too have lost good fish to hooks being straightened. But that has mainly been my own fault by having too much drag and the fish having too much fight left in it when bringing it it.

Of course if you are trying to get the fish away from a snag (or - a shark, croc, groper) then you have to try to bully it in.

Whilst their is a human holding the rod there is always room for human error, it all happens to quick in most cases correct that error.
I think upgrading hooks can some times eliminate part of the room for error
We will all have a different opinion, but all I have of that trophy fish is a story and a strait hook.
The mistakes be it humane or hook are punished in a few seconds. The memory of them lasts forever. I really wish I had have backed the drag of a bit more, or had a bigger stronger hook.
It may have still happened as he may have straightened most of it during the fight and the last flick pulled it, Ill never know
Same hooks had held plenty of smaller, but still good size fish. Just not good enough for this one

It's always interesting to see the strength tests - even though I've seen similar before, the use of a whiteboard makes them totally legit...

However, I don't believe many damaged hooks, be they straightened/broken/twisted whatever, ever come from the straight pull of a fish - to the rod/reel/drag.  In my experience, this is from forces working "only" on the hooks/rings, etc.  ie. the force of a fish opening and closing it's mouth with prongs in opposing jaws will have plenty of direct impact on the hook/s but near none on the line/rod/reel/drag...
Similarly, I don't think many failed/pulled out twisted wires come from a straight and constant pull pressure - but more so weird angles and twisting.

Agree with you there Ducks ...... and Kimo. More often then the hooks failing, I tend to pull the hooks out by not having the drag properly set.

It is surprising how much extra power and stamina a spanish mackerel gains when they reach over 20 kilos. I too have been caught out by them. They often come up easy enough, I think just to look at the boat and you think you have them. Then they take off big time and you realise it is much bigger then you initially thought and you don't have time to adjust your drag. This is when I usually pull my hooks on them.

Blinky has done them. Aaron (kuttafurra) has done them too. I have a feeling Shane (joker) did as well? And probably other guys I've forgotten.

If you look at this gentlemen's YouTube videos he does test on screw eyes, haywire twists etc quite interesting to see at what point they break and straighten out.
