Have been home now for a couple of days. We had an enjoyable road trip after the Lure Expo catching up with friends and family, apart from those who tolerated myself, Wal and Shaun at the lure expo.
On the Monday after the expo Shaun headed back home to Manilla NSW while Wal and I started fishing and sight seeing sites further south catching up with mates and family. Our first stop for a fish was the headlands and break walls around Brunswick heads for a few days. Wal hooked up to a couple of jewfish, one which took him for an 80 metre run before straightening the points on two trebles and escaping. I had to take a back seat for most of this week due to a pinched nerve in my shoulder. Contrary to popular belief, it WAS NOT due to being over excited about seeing all the lures at the expo We headed further south to Ballina, with catch up stops along the way. There we met up with Shaun again for a few more days. Wal and Shaun both had a couple of runs from jewies but none stayed connected. Wal had landed a couple of tailor though, one went 65 cm to the fork and the other at over 75 cm to the fork. Wal hooked up to the smaller tailor not a bad by catch while chasing jewies While I was still recovering from my pinched nerve, I had a look in the Naval and Maritime Museum in Ballina. If ever you are down that way, support them and have a look - cheap admission. Best to have a few spare hours up your sleeve though. There are hundreds of model ships to marvel at. I won't (can't) post up all the photos I took but here is one of them. My shoulder came good while in Ballina and we had a fish at night off the rocks. By this time Shaun had gone back to Manilla. I had a good run which I thought was a solid hook up only to have the jewie spit out the lure. I lost 4 lures that night and Wal lost 3. As Wal says, that's the price of jewie fishing the rocks. We headed further south fishing another headland. Wal hooked up on his first cast and was holding it in the water to tire it out. But a big wave crashed over a rocky ledge and pushed the fishing into a patch of boulders - the end of that fish, photo is of Wal hooked up to it. A few more stops then onto Newcastle so I could abuse B.O.B. to his face and visa versa Wal and Bob After annoying B.O.B. for a few days we headed west to Manilla with more catch up stops along the way. We fished around Manilla for a couple of days for one little murray cod (Wal) a a 44 cm yellow belly (me). We all had hits from other fish but they were pretty much shut down due to the low water. Wal's cod my yellowbelly Moving further north we stopped in at Terry Marshall (Garra Lures) and Les Barlow. Wal and Les y We fished around the Stanthorpe area finally finding some fishable water. Wal was busted off during a night fish and he retrieved the lure from a different snag the next day. We both had brief hook ups and short strikes and follows with Wal landing the only fish - a fat yellowbelly of about 46 cm. Photos of the yellowbelly and of the near dry Severn River (we got rained upon the last night the river rose a little, but a lot more was needed). We picked up the trailer we left at Rodsncods place - cheers for that Mick, then headed to my sister's place for a couple of nights. Over the next few days we dropped in to see Bluey (George Horvarth) then Ray Murphy. At Townsville we stopped for a rest and to dry the tents out after a dew the night before dampened them. We had a bit of a flick in a well fished creek. Wal dropped a 40 cm barra and I landed the beauty in the photo below. Remember, this is a 75 mm(3 inch) lure Back in Cooktown and I didn't miss much with only just a couple of days of good weather for the reef in the 4 weeks I was away. Good news is that the road from Cooktown to Lakefield National Park is now open so I'll start going there. Below is a photo of an estimated 14 foot (4.3 metre) crocodile at Croc Bend, a critter we didn't have to worry about when we were down south. |

Good read, Martin and nice pictures. Looking forward to getting hold of some of Wal's lures when he gets around to them.

No Steve, we were looking for the very sudsy , white water for the jewfish. With all of the noise of the crashing surf, the lure needs to put out a very "solid" sort of vibration, hence why Wal's jewie lures for the surf have a lot of body to them.
