I had the opertunity recently to head east and do some jungle perch fishing in some amazing country with a good friend of mine. There were other fish to be caught but it was the lure of the jungle perch that had me chomping at the bit.
I made a few small 60mm shallow (just under the surface shallow) and 80mm diving lures for this trip but after a few missed half hearted hits the decision was made to go full surface lure in the form of a walk the dog style lure. I was unable to buy what I wanted, so I was nothing short of stoked when one of my bibless stick baits caught me my first jungle perch. I don’t have the technique down yet but I think I might have to make a few more and do some practice. We went on to catch 7 or 8 more fish each and also a few other fish like tarpon, archerfish and even a couple of solid jacks. Enjoy |

good stuff danny, a few fish, and I bet your glad you placed those hooks un central to increase action for said lure, and also minimise hook rash, well done all round :)

I’m still experimenting but I’m happy to get tips. By un central do you mean from front to back? It currently sits with its head just out of the water. Should they be ass heavy or will the action be better if the hook came forward more?

For my 2 cents worth, I like these lures with a heads up attitude. This way you can "see-saw" the lure in one spot. Nice place and nice fish

Hey Danny, nice work on the JP's. That's a special river but I've only fly fished it so can't help you with the lures
Do you know Steve the local 4wd training instructor? Cheers Cliff |

Yeah mate I do. He has a couple of sons my age and we’re both been involved in organising the local pig hunt here for the best part of the last 10 years. In saying that we don’t cross paths too often but due to different work commitments.

I find spooks often walk better tied directly (no loop knot)
I figure the loop doesn't transmit the tap tap taps to the eye as effectively, if that makes sense. |

Wow that’s a big fish. I’ve heard they can get that big and maybe more but the ones we got were all about the same as the ones in the pics.

Yeah he likes his beer and pig hunting. First time I met him he was at the Golfy organising the annual pig hunt. My son and I used foam flys tied Gurgler or Foamberg style. They can be jiggled on the spot or stripped to pop or push water so I reckon you're on the right track with your lures. They should be awesome on Sooties too

HUGE fish, my biggest went 460 mm but have heard of systems further south where they hit over 500 mm. One of those would be awesome.
