A few months back I got frustrated with my pencil and stick 'marking gauge' so decided to try and make one with a bit of accuracy and none of the tap tap tap to get it right--Yeah, I know this is sad but I found all the bits in the shed, not one trip to Bunnings - works nice but I should not have shellacked it, it tended to jamb a bit until worn in - stuck the lure box 'logo' on to make it look more like a bought one

If you're talking about Pete's post it is used for marking out the centre line of the lure (and carving lines I guess). You put the nail where you think the centre is, similar to using the pencil, keep alternating sides until in the same position and tighten the block up against it when you get the exact centre.

Toad- I'm assuming this is a genuine question?? Sorry, I was thinking everyone knew what a 'marking gauge' is? Very-Very old tool, I'm not religious but Joseph probably used one. You can buy them now, but they are about twice the size I want, not sure if you can get them to screw the up like 'vernier calliper's' (see here- http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/page.aspx?p=32612&cat=1,43513,43546). Marking gauges usually slide to a pre-set measurement and are 'set' with a thumb screw lock - A good one will cost an arm and leg, here are a few variations -- http://toolmakingart.com/2011/01/10/marking-gauges/ Lots of different ones here (very cheap) - Used for scribing a parallel line to an edge on wood, plastic or steel (curved or straight), or to find a centre on a wooden plank or just to mark a line for a saw or chisel cut- I mainly use this for marking a centre of a lure blank and for hook hangers/ tow points etc. Pencil marks can be sanded/rubbed away, but a scribed line is there until you decide to remove /fill it. Here is a how to make a standard one-- Sorry 'Norc', been typing this for 20 min . Pete

Pete I was just wondering if you've ever used a wheel marking gage ? And was thinking it might be the go for a centre line on a small lure and carving edges ?
any thoughts on that compared to the larger marking gage Cheers Rick |

Thanks Stiney, just found these, hardly worth making . Rick-never used one but would be better than scoring wood, I also use it to mark hole centres for hangers/tow point etc- Here is a bunch of them at Carba-tec, not a bad price- Pg 63.

I have one of the marking gauges in the Carbatech catalogue (PW-101) and it works a treat. However it comes with only short 3 leads about 25 mm long if I remember and you cannot buy spares would you believe. I have resorted to stripping leads from pencils, until I can find a supply of the old style clutch pencil leads. Billj

Bill - I happen to have some of those leads (and pencil) ---I bought mine in Denmark but you can get them here ( 3B Faber-Castell TK 9071 2mm Leads for Clutch Pencil ) http://www.ebay.com/bhp/faber-castell-leads --- they come in 3 - 2 or 1B and harder. OR check out your local art shop. Pete

One for the lath guys who might want to do nudes in poppers scratch free or just want to have a nice smooth base. Photo pretty self explanatory.
Cheap home made bowl sander type tool, consist of 1/4 inch bolt, two locking nuts, large washer for a backing a small washer for the base which will be embedded into the rubber and locked in with a thin nut, 1 1/2-2 inch diameter closed cell foam and again one same in hard rubber, Velcro strip, contact glue of some sort, brass tube for the shaft to fit in a spade bit extension bar or a dowel partly drilled out to fit the brass tubing (which acts as a bearing). A water pipe punch for cutting the sanding disk (felt backing). To use it turn your popper, sand it buy hand (120 grit I think forgotten the grit sizes ), shift the tool rest back. Hard wood you can use the closed cell foam backing with a 240 grit disk, for soft woods I use the hard rubber disk sander, place tool on the tool rest, turn your lathe on and move the sander in at a angle to touch the wood roughly centre to centre outside of the disk, speed of the lathe will spin it up. Alternative move the tool rest out of the way and use the lathe bed to guide you in. Couple runs usually does the trick then I look at it if I'm happy I give it a lick of metho then fire up again and give it another couple light runs after the metho evaporates. Tip don't leave the disk on the work piece for long length of time as the generate lots of heat and you don't want the disk (Velcro) to come apart and if you find you a doing more runs then normal give a spell to cool. For me I use the no clog sanding papers comes in packets you will find them in Bunnings. If done correctly you will have scratch free work and baby bum smooth work quick and easy. If I'm too vague tell me. Cheers Tincan |

I have been working on a solution to Cranky's drilling problem and have tried a solution drilling 3/16" holes with no problem using a process which I will explain soon. I will have to take a lot of photos. Needless to say my daughter just procured 2 x 30 mm 1/8" dormer drills ( not cheap) I applied the same process with these drill bits. I successfully drilled a continuous hole in a piece of huon pine 180 mm long and a piece of western red cedar 240 mm long with no issues Photos soon.

Started out as a line spooler and ended up being retrofitted into a marking gauge with removable pen and adjustable line width Pen mount is a cord 'cleaty thing' from Whitworths which grips the pen tightly. |

Crankys drilling problem
I have successfully completed the challenge successfully drilling a 1/8" hole through a round piece of western red cedar 50mm in diam and 240mm long I used a lathe to turn the timber a jig to commence drilling a 300mm drill to complete drilling using a battery hand drill and some patience The jig is from 6mm aluminium angle and 6mm aluminium base the angle is accurately welded at 90 degrees to the base. when placed on drill base plate drill is parallel to angle The timber turned in the wood lathe has the advantage of having the centres from lathe which accurately marks the drilling centers. The timber is taped to the jig ensuring that is not touching the base plate and then drilling standard length 1/8 drilling to one end for the total length of the drill. It is important to drill slowly relieving the swarth continually. Then reverse the timber in the jig and drill the other end. Once both ends are drilled, remove from jig and I put the short drill in my small battery drill and make sure the holes are drilled as far as the drill will go. Then comes the easy part. I fit the 300mm drill to the battery drill & mark just over half the timber length on the drill. Then I commence, very slowly & relieving the drill bit constantly until it is half way through then remove drill and drill from the other end until the holes meet. I have done quite a few this way and have only had one where the holes were slightly mismatched however could still get a wire through. It has taken longer to type this than to actually get the hole. I believe drilling slowly without forcing the drill and the accuracy of the jig are important factors. QED |

Well thought out Bill, that angle Al would make a big difference, I could also use that in my little metal lathe--
I never thought you would be able to get such a fine drill in that length,,,, where do you get these?. Thanks for posting. Pete |

My daughter got them for me through her work I will have to ask her who supplies them. They are not cheap however. It was more the challenge for me, never say never. Chris Steel would be fine. material irrelevant. I have mate who welds aluminium and stainless and it was what we had. Accuracy of 90 degrees most important, as is drilling from both ends rather than trying to drill the hole from one end only. it is also important that timber is free of the base of the jig so that the drill is parallel to the the jig in case the end of the timber is not square Billj
