    Posted: 02 Mar 2015 at 3:33pm

Late last year I started trying to collect one barra lure from each maker, but as I progressed, one style started to stand out from the rest. When I read the story of Vic McCrystal giving Eric Moller a Heddon Tiger lure to copy, and this went on to become an icon of Barra Lures in Australia, that was enough for me, I decided to concentrate on just this style of lure.

As is turns out, just about every Barra Lure maker made a Tiger style lure at some stage, and each one made it in their own unique way.

I have been searching high and low for months, and have come up with over 50 lures, nearly half of these have come from Barry, to which I am very grateful. I have 36 identified makers, and 13 unidentified so far.

The U's above are unknowns at this stage, so looking for help on ID's.

My plan is to do up a display for the 2015 Expo, and also have an info sheet with the year and what town these lure makers originated.

I also have and Oargee Barra shallow on the way, and a Don Bailey.

The models I am yet to secure are a Leads, Norm Edwards, Jeff Reidy, Oldman, Richard Lees, Gavin Rehbein and I am sure there are others out there.

When you look at them all lined up, they are so similar, yet unique, and I love the history behind them and early barra lure making in Australia.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt, a great idea and display. Look forward to seeing it grow. Clap Seeing them all like that actually makes me appreciate the old barra lure much more.

Thanks guys, still a work in progress, I didn't realise just how many guys were making there own lures in North Queensland in the 60s/70s/80s/90s.

Mick, I will put U7 down as Bruce Glanville, thanks.

Scotty, another Unknown! hopefully someone here might be able to help.

I do have a few other makers here like LTL, Lucinda, Flint, Sure, Tinaroo, Fysshe, Nautilas, Tom Murray and Go Get Em, but I don't have an early 4" Tiger Style lure from these guys. But willing to swap out lures, if anyone has lures that would suit the collection.

Thanks,

Matt

Don't know where South Rochedale is? If it's near Cairns you can score another 4" barra maker from Bransford's at Clifton Beach, Wal Galina from Mareeba makes a beauty an sells from there. Alternatively, give Keith Graham a call, I'm sure he would send you one.

Matt, I have this nice looking 4" Tiger that Lionel sent up to me awhile ago. You can have it for your display as it would look much better there... Smile I don't know of its history; maybe Lionel could help. I'll drop in and see if I can get a 4'' model from Joe Flint... Cheers Ian

More thanks! and Tony I will follow that up when I get a chance.

I am not chasing any made this century, unless they are a 'replica' model made by the same maker, to display how they made an early tiger.

Ian that is very similar in paint job to the Barry Bevan I have, but the bibs and eyelets are different. Very keen to add it to the collection.

Cheers,

I received this Don Bailey lure today from Casey - thanks! As soon as I got it, I put it beside the Bruce Glanville that Mick ID'd. They look very similar in shape and paint. Then Casey tells me that these guys were mates in Townsville and made lures together sometimes, or shared paint and equipment to make them. Keith Boysey was also in the mix with these guys, all in Townsville. Great to learn all this, lots of blanks to fill in.

Matt, I'll be bringing down my 'unknowns' box, hopefully some will be identified. Included are some 4" Tiger style minnows from FNQ and the NT, some you might be interested in, so bring down trades, preferably HH BarraKings, we'll see what transpires around the trade-table.

Blinky, that is a great lure for the collection thanks very much!!!

Tony, it will be good to meet you at the expo, and see your lures and hopefully ID some unknowns.

I have had some more additions to this Tiger collection, Thanks to more great members on here. I will post an update shot in the next couple of days.

Cheers,

Finally, I am getting around to updating the post with new lures I have received for the Tiger Collection. Thanks to Mick, Trev, Blinky, Fysshe, Richard, plus a couple of random deals. I have bought a few and very generously had a few donated for this collection. I can't say thank you enough to those who have found lures to send me!

Although not all strictly the 4" size, I have added a some special lures.

I finally got a hold of the 4" Heddon Tiger, the lure that started it all.

I also added a Ron Dau, Barra King, a Lees lure by Richard, a Tom Murray, a Blinky 4 Mile Hole lure! A Joe Flint, an Oldman in 5" (would be happy to swap for a 4" if anyone has one?) I put a Knolls metal jacket in the collection for now. I picked up a unknown that is probably an old Gallo. and one more unknown.

That's it for now. Still looking for a Norm Edwards, a Richo, a Leads, and any other Aussie makers who made a 4" Tiger lure in the 60s to 90s era.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Ian....Not sure where that lure came from but I have had it from the 1980's. Hope that helped.

I am finally putting the display together for the expo. Using grey pin board material as the backing - after suggestion from a certain member making a similar display. I think it will work out great for easily repositioning lures.

I laid the lures out on the board yesterday, just for an idea of how they will fit.

I am still chasing a leads, Edwards and Reidys in tiger style. Not looking to buy, but just borrow for the expo, if someone is coming down and can lend them, please let me know.

I will have this together next week, and list all the makers.

Cheers,

Matt

But I am going to put them in the display, as someone made them sometime, and maybe a few could be ID'd at the expo.

Your tiger collection is looking awesome Matt, nice work!

I'll bring a 4" Old Man for the expo if you still need one.  Let me know if you think I might have any others you need.

Hey Casey, paint looks very similar, but wires a stainless and smaller loop. So many minor differences in lures, I think there were so many backyarders that made small quantities, and probably had variations in nearly all their lures - unlike production makers who are easier to ID.

Thanks Tony, I have a five inch Oldman, its in the pics above, in the 30 April post. But a 4-inch shallow would suit the collection better. Happy just to borrow for the expo, or swap for that one of mine if you wanted to.

I have almost finished the frame, and hope to start pinning up and labelling lures, to get an idea of where I am at.

Cheers,

Matt

Belated update on my 4" Tiger collection. I displayed this at the 2015 Expo. I thought I might have put it up elsewhere, but anyway here it is.

I have added a few since, and have been gradually finding yellow and black versions from each maker to upgrade the collection to reflect the Heddon and Moller Tiger colour.

I was very lucky to find a signed Leads earlier this year. The only major lure maker I am still missing is Jeff Reid.

Always looking to add to the collection or update info.

T

Top lure - Heddon Tiger
Second Row - Eric Mollers
Third Row - Norm Edwards, C-Lures, Leads Lures, Gallo Lures, Barra King - Henry Hall, JM Lures

Fourth Row - Bk Lures, George Dempster, Killalure, Barra Lures - Bob Radloff, Barra King by Ron Dau, Zangrande.

Fifth Row - Wild Rivers, Sure Lure, Elliots, Oargee, Lees, Flicks.

Sixth Row - Don Porter, Don Bailey, Bruce Glanville, Mal Coffey, G Lures/Forster, JVN John Venn

Seventh Row - Jack Ruge, Keith Boyse, Gavin Rehbein, Greg Belford, Timber King, Peter Munt.

Seventh Row - repeated

Eighth Row - Tom Murray, Joe Flint, John O'Sullivan, Ron Henderson - Local Lures, Peter Haynes, John Knoll.

Ninth Row - Ken Stein, Barry Coppen, Barry Bevan, Westy Moller, Stan Holmes, Lionel White

Tenth Row - Graeme Tredrea, Steve Theofanes, Darryl Steel, Cut throat - Mark Upton, Old Man lures, Blinky lures,

Eleventh Row - Ken Wilkins, Peter Stockwell, Aubrey Thomas, Seaweed Lures, Wayne Baldwin, George Scotland

12 & 13th Rows unknowns.

Cheers,

Matt
