The deep diver is quite old and one I used to love for Mangrove Jacks when I first came to Cairns.

I've never seen the top Rapala before Barry - is that model still made?

Cheers, Tony

Maybe Darby will have clues to the age but I had an orange and gold one as well as a blue one in the 70's.
Great Lure

Barry, what colours ( not gold ) would you suggest for Jacks. I am headed up central QLD, probably looking north of Rocky or just south of 1770. Both these spots have Jacks so I was going to paint up a few lures with smaller pointy bibs than the cod lures have to target them. I have found that the light blue in the top lure pic has been a good colour and will do at least one in this I think. Might make up a jointed one as well.

Well Alistair
Looks like I have a greater chance of meeting you than Thore in the short term!
Hope you make time to call in, who knows we may get a fish together.
i don't chase Jacks myself, though did catch a 8lb one in the Causeway when I was a 10 year old.
My trusty 6" wooden spool  Avley and a rangoon cane rod my Dad made me! No lures then at nght , a nice live whiting did the trick!

G'day Wayne, Carmila beach is a spot I was looking at. Do you have any info on it or recommendations of other areas for me. I will have the family with Jayco pop top camper and am looking for places that have these things as stipulated by the missus. Not a caravan park, beside or on the beach, not crowded, decent beach (not mud and rocks), decent swimming for the kids and decent fishing for me. May have a car topper boat with me or if not Kayaks. Looking at a 4 night stay in that area.

How far is Yepoon away from there?

Mate
I had many enjoyable and fish filled holidays just north of Mackay, This area is about 4 hrs from Yeppoon.
The place we stayed , camping ground and cabins were , Halliday Bay, Cape Hillsborough (good for kids) lots of variety in a small area, rocky headlands, mudflats, sandy beaches, tidal island that can be waded to. Rocky groin to fish back with the tide  and with a boat the opportunities are even greater . I never owned a boat in the mid to late 80's but also put a feed on the table up there. Carmilla beach in my opinion is a hole, mud hole , bloody awful for wife and kids,,,,tide goes out for ever leaves shitty looking beach.
Only time I stopped there for morning tea, I was hunted off what I thought was public land on beach from, turned out to be a very aggressive guy who owned the land and lived on the block next door. Not a good first or last experience for me there.

Cape Hillsborough is a good base, only an hour from Mackay to go shopping, meal out at the pub, etc and then 30 mins drive to other fishing spots around the area.
Hope this helps, sorry about putting @#!% on Carmilla beach.

cheers

This is a pic of Carmila Beach I found. Does not sound like the same place but I know the tides are big up there.

I have spent a little time up north of Mackay with Tony a few years back. Some great country but it is just a bit too far to go. I know its not much further but 14hrs from home is the limit I will do in 2 days driving with the family in the car.

Plan B is just south of 1770 so may need to look closer there then.

Alistair, lure colours I like for Jacks are Blue Back with Silver belly and sides,Black Back and silver and Black Back with Gold sides. The SR-7 and SR-8 in the sardine pattern and the orange pattern are sensational, however your handmade ones will stand up better I would think.
Keep the profile streamlined with deep divers that do not pull hard desirable.Sardines,Mud Herring, Hardyheads and Mullet are the prime targets of Jacks and of coarse Prawns.
If the water is quite clear I will use very natural colours and when discoloured I like the orange or gold. With Lutjanus Argentimaculatus accurate casting is by far the key to success.
Hope this helps

Thanks, I will have a bit of a play with the paints. Big smile

Here is a prototype one I made. Perhaps a bit chunky for Jacks but as you said, placement is the key. The bib is pinned for strength.
