Can anyone help me identify this old abu? It has no stickers, looks to be 5000 size? has an unusual four star drag. |

Ed, looks to be a 5000. I had one the same I bought in Singapore around 79/80. Good barra baitcaster, can't compare definitely, as I gave to my youngest nephew several years ago. I'd say fairly confidently it's the same as the one I had. May even still have the box, I'll take a look later.
Seaweed.

I checked quite a lot of ABU schematics, but couldn't find one with all those features! It may be a 5000 Sprint with a handle from another model. The 4 pt drag knob was common on a few models.

thanks very much seaweed, steiny and fysshe I have been looking around online at a few collectors posts etc and cant seem to find an match for this reel so maybe it has been altered by somebody ,I read that they introduced the curved endplate like the 6000c I posted in around 81 so that ties in with seaweeds date . would it still be possible to get parts to overhaul it ?

Last time I bought parts for an ABU was in K-Mart (when they sold them)--I think you can readily obtain any bits for them, a lot of the innards are interchangeable, as we see on this one with the different handle.
If you google it you will find sites/ stores that sell parts, also schematic drawings _ ALthough I can't get into it (not a member), P.J's post is probably the best lead. Post up what you find- It could be handy . Pete |
