Anyone used this for lures before? I was given a small piece a couple of years back by the Timber Slab factory at Mullumbimby to try and just got around to it. Seems easier to carve a bit more than cedar and when 2 blanks (Cedar and Amoora) are floated it does not sit any deeper in the water. Has a nice colour as well for a nude I think. Specs below.

Scientific name

Amoora spp. Principally A. cucullata. Family: Meliaceae

Local names

Pacific maple, thitni (Burma), amoor (Pakistan), tasua (Thailand), amari (India), mava, mua mua, mawa, lulua, maota, namota, manatpuku, garotai, maoa, muta. There are several species in Malaysia which may be mixed in parcels of meranti. Often shipped as ´Meliaceae´ in mixed parcels.

Wood appearance

Colour. Heartwood ranges from pink-brown to red-brown. Sapwood is a distinctly lighter colour and can be white to pink-brown and 25 mm wide.

Grain. Grain is straight or slightly interlocked, with moderately coarse texture.

Wood properties

Density. 555 kg/m3 at 12 % moisture content; approximately 1.8 m3 of seasoned, sawn timber per tonne.

Alistair,
Not seen any so far to play with, but looking at the specs, Red Cedar is around 540-560 kg/m3 (FMFM)
Should be okay if it holds glue/screws alright.

If it's Pacific Maple, I used a lot of it in the 90's and was similar to Meranti but sanded a lot smoother! Cheers Ian.

Sounds like the stuff, pretty much what I have read about it on the net with wood workers descriptions. Carves a bit better than cedar but has a similar feel. Why did you stop using it? supply issues or found something better? I need the floation in some lures I am making due to a heavy bib so beech is out and I cant find any Jeluton locally at the moment.

Had some parts turn up at work and the crate was made from Pacific maple. Couldn't find any more so I switched to Meranti which was available at Hardwarehouse. Was also using white Beech but had trouble with paint not adhering to it!

Can we see a pic of the timber? Sounds like a similar density to Red cedar which is my favourite cabinet timber.
cheers steiny

Red cedar in the middle for comparison, Not really similar to cedar, does make very fine dust, that is a bit irratable.
