Hi Guys,

I am considering re-painting some of  lures for my night land-based estuary adventures.

I noticed that reflective (metal finish) does not work well for me  at night and most productive are likely dark lures. So, I went to extremes  and repainted 5  different  action lures to black matte color  and tried  all of them a few days later with no positive catch results. I did not use any scents. So, I just wondering if the color does not work or fresh paint put off the fish.

What HB/metal lure colors do you prefer for night fishing?

Thank you.

Black gives the best profile at night.

Dark Purple worked best for me.

I agree with the 2 above that black or purple are great night colours "BUT" I spent nearly a decade fly fishing the lakes on the Southern Highlands for trout and mainly at night. If there was any moon at all we used to just go home, one time (can't remember why?) I decided to stay back and try a few things, I put on a rabbit zonker in sky blue and was instantly rewarded with a good brown, got several more that night and it became part of the way we fished over the next few seasons. Chasing jew in the Clarence, black and gold was always my go to colour, except at first and last light when I would switch to a large Drop Bear Squidgie with great success, if there is any available light (artificial or natural) try a white or very light colour, if its completely dark then black or purple will give you the best silhouette.

Thank you guys.  I will try again white/light colors.  Are there more supporters of light/white lures over dark lures  under artificial/natural light at night?

Also, what is your experience with glowing lures at night (excluding squid jigs and glowing stick attractants e.g. for hairtail)?
I tried  a few of them, and so far I noticed  the only benefit  to see  the direction and distance of lure casting at night.

as far as poppers go it should'nt matter a whole lot color wise but as Martin suggested a gold glint cetainly would help as fish would think this a bit of flash from a scale of something.Ive found chromed lures work well under bridges that are illuminated at night ,ive only tried this in the salt though
what Bigriver said about the trout flies makes a lot of sense and i'll back him up on this because ivr caught trout on moonlit streams using a white moth pattern that was partly submerged.as far as glowing lures go though i think they're best application is deep sea and not much else (just my opinion and i could be wrong).one method a friend of my uses is to have his missus shine a dull torch on a shallow diving lure as he works it just under the surface and he catches some good bass this way

Thank you guys for the suggestions re lure colors for night in lit and non-lit areas.

Any other experiences with lumo/glow lures for non-deep sea fishing?

Yes I think it is purely that "glint" factor from the full moon onto the shiny gold chrome.   - nothing else worked on these nights. This was  one of 3 that Chris Henry caught in an hour's flicking on our first night that we tried poppers at night. We both got busted up a few times. Other nights produced a few more barra and many more bust offs.

Thank you guys. I' ll probably will paint a few lures in white color as the responses are different.  For some reason I have only lure in white. And will get my shiny and gold poppers out of boxes for a night swim.
