Here is a lure that was sent to me by Barry (fish69blue). Thanks Barry, much appreciated. I thought he should have his own section in the QLD lures
It is a big sucker of a popper with a body length of 6 1/2 inches. Hopefully Mr Cross can fill,us in a bit more on how he made them, and the history as well as maybe a few memorable captures on them. He might even show us some others as well. Tony, can you post a pic of yours mate
Barry gave this info "It is for GT and Dog tooth.Terry Leadbetter painted it 20 yrs ago.It does not have a name."

They are great looking lures, and that one being painted by Terry Leadbeater is a really nice touch
I agree that we need to create a section for Barry's lures as i am sure they have accounted for more than their fair share of awesome sportsfish! What should the section for your lures be cally Barry? Cross Lures, or Captain Cranky lures maybe?
Alistair you know I don't have one and that was just nasty But thanks for sharing! |

Woohoo! Thanks Barry - Looks like I'd better dig up some other things to send in addition to the extra lure stands I'd send you a few lures made by me but firstly I don't make any, and secondly if I did I don't think you'd want them p.s. Alistair --> |

Thats alright Tony. I got mine first.
How are they made Barry? Does the lead weight in the bum make much difference to the action?

They are made on a wood lathe out of very old western red cedar.I researched specific densities of timber before I decided on what to use.The flotation and strength qualities were paramount. The lead is bullet shaped and is very important to the action of the lure. The mould for the lead I had made in England by a toolmaker friend there.I will give out more info soon. I am going to bed because I have to get up at 5 in the morning to go to sea.Regards Barry

A wonderfull parcel arrived!
Barry sent me the awesome gift of two of his excellent poppers! These two particular ones are very special in that they have a dash of talent from not just one, not even two, but FOUR Great Aussie fishing icons! Designed by Barry, these 2 specific lures were made on the Lathe by Henry Hall, One was painted by Terry Leadbeater, and the other painted by Ron Gallo. It's amazing how distinctive the paint styles by Ron and Terry are when seen side by side on the same canvas. Thank you very much Barry, these are awesome Lures, although I have to admit I couldn't force myself to fish either one of them! |

Very nice Pete, what a stunner!
Love the woodgrain, and the Ron Gallo eyes are very distinctive A very special lure from a very special bloke who'm I believe was responsible for pioneering the GT on popper fishery in Australia (don't tell him I mentioned that as he might get cranky) |

The 3 you have Pete are all very old western red cedar.
The hooks are 6/0 VMC with 4/0 black crane swivels.
The wire is 1.2mm 316 s/s welding wire.
Yours are all painted by Ron Gallo.
In future I will hand sign all my poppers.
They were originally made in the mid eighties to fill a gap in our day to day GT fishing.
The only good lures at the time were Large Rebel Bloopers, the odd Gibbs popper and the Lg Arbogast Scudder. All these were USA and still not quite big enough or robust enough for what I was doing in the early days of GT fishing.
When Halco came to me years ago to discuss making a series of poppers I was more than happy to help out where I could. As soon as the Large Haymaker Halco popper was ready I stopped using mine and only ever gave out a few to very loyal Japanese clients. To this day I still do it.
I will put up some pics and a better story at a later date.

In the very early days of painting I did a few but was as useless as a letterbox on a submarine so I had Terry paint them.None were made from about 1990 till about 2009 when I started to get Ron to paint them for me.The Gap was when I had a bit of stock and did not fish them however over the years they dwindled down as gifts so I decided to go again.I still had about a cubic mtr of western red in the rafters.Too much info hooroo.

Does it get any better for a FNQ timber lure lover with the blokes involved in these poppers? I love Ron Gallo's paint style and he is probably my favourite lure maker. A great example of FNQ lure history I reckon!

I didn't start chasing GT's until 1995 and was part of the crew that fished with Damon Olsen
prior to him becoming Nomad Sportsfishing. As an angler who was lucky enough to straddle the mono-braid change over in GT fishing, I've gotten to see a fair bit of developmental gear and have helped a little in that gear development as well. One thing that I have never forgotten is those who have tread before me and I have a deep respect for people such as Capt Barry Cross and what a trail-blazer he has been for GT fishing in this country. Barry is just part of that era that "did" things. I doubt he did what he did to get his name in lights or a 1000 pats on the back. Though, IMO, he deserves both. The fact that he made these poppers himself and that they have all the features of a quality GT lure from today (bar the lack of split rings) is remarkable. The other thing is that these large lures were being flung around on mono!! I'd love to know how often they would survive! I am so excited and humbled that I have this piece of Australian GT lure history. Thanks Barry! Best wishes and fishes,, Aaron. PS, is this a Leadbetter or Gallo paint job on this one? PPS...... when are you going to do your memoirs?
