Hey guys, seeing as i have no trailer for my boat at the moment im landlocked, so i need another way of scratching my itch.. ive been wanting to have a go at beach fishing with lures and was hoping someone could give me a few pointers. I was thinking of going down, maybe trying to spot a gutter or something and throwing some metal slices around, apart from that i dont really know what im looking for in the way of tides and finding the fish ect... any tips/advice would be appreciated.
Terry

Where Terry???
Around here, Newcastle, pick your gutters as the tide gets low. Wash, travelling accrosss a gutter, is always handy, as predators use this airated water for ambush. Would translate roughly as; shooting in fog, using heat signitures for targetting. Look for birds DIVING into the wash, they have the advantage of searching from a height. Any other signs of Baitfish activity, Jumping, Skitterring, even Scales in the water, all indicate areas of interest. Don't give up! Your retrieve may be SMASHED in the shorebreak, in only a foot of water! These are general pointers, as I don't know where you fish.. I have fished many beaches locally, and a few in S/E Qld. These pointers apply in all of these areas. Hope this helps, Best of Luck! Cheers MAL |

The dark side looks to be on the money to me. The falling tide concentrates the bait and target fish into the best gutters/holes on the beach. However top of the tide can also be rewarding as it sometimes concentrates the bait into shallower and closer channels sometimes very close to shore. Lower rod tip a little and work the lure close to the shore. If lure fishing for mulloway be prepared to slow down your retrieve whether using metals or plastics like big scroungers. Surf fishing for mulloway is challenging and rewarding one of my favourite forms of fishing Billj

TerryDo not forget to use a fly dropper. More often than not you will catch more on the fly than the actual lure.
Did a lot of that type of fishing of the rocky head lands and beaches in Tassie. Regards John

No mate attached to swivel above the lure, with the amount of toothy critters up your way, it might get chopped off at the swivel and you lose the fly and the lure. Very common to use down south.
I fished it off the beaches on King island (Eastern side wind in your back) great for catching salmon, two at a time not uncommon. Interesting to read how you fair up in your neck of the woods. regards John
