    Posted: 03 Feb 2011 at 2:02pm
Guys, my good mate George Voukolos (Fishing & Outdoor World, Darwin), turned 60 recently, a month before me. As a B/Day present I gave him one of my 'Barraguru Lures', he then gave me this barra prototype called a Spitfire. I don't own any B.C. lures and he knows I'm a collector.
This lure was sent to George to get the boys to evaluate, by trolling in the Daly R.
Doesn't look like anyone has given it a swim yet, I think George feels I'll try it and get back to him.
Has anyone here seen another, for all George knows it could be the only one, thus I'm a bit reluctant to troll, knowing my habit of hanging them up in snags. Beautifully finished and as you can see it's a big chunk of a lure. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Regards, Tony.

I have a vauge recollection of holding a spitfire in Brett's house a good 9+ mths back. Looks like a nice lure. Looking at the bib I have a feeling it may be a converted bib given to him and Peter Newell by Don Lawson (i think) which was used in the wildfire scorpion proptotype Peter worked on which i have one and Wazza another as well as a Guppy I have. By the looks of it Brett has taken the sides off it.

Better give it a swim I reconWink

Spitfires are fairly new and should be coming out as a production (plastic) model this year so a painted timber version sent to the NT for testing should be part of your collection as it has a good story to it whcih adds to its collectibility.

Thanks for feedback guys, yes I think George has had it hanging in the shop for at least a year, so that tallies with your timeline Alistair.
I think George did mention something about the bib being a little thin, one of the boys gave it a test troll and the bib flexed too much, making it troll erratically. I'd say he provided Brett with feedback on this and if they are going into production you'd expect this has been considered.
I'm personally not into trolling, find the exercise of going up and down through an area where fish are seen on a sounder, until worrying them into striking, slightly unsporting, but each to his own.
Besides, trolling a lure this big would give my wrist RSI.LOL
Regards, Tony (Darwin, NT).

About 12 months ago I put up in the "what the blazes" section a lure identified by Handbrake as a spitfire made by Brett Campbell. But this one was longer, more hooks, and from memory a surface lure. Owner of this lure is Terry Marshall from Garra Lures. It too has that step down on the belly.

Lyonel, very interesting the one you show has a 10cm body, that's much shorter than the original prototype I showed in 2011. I'd say any BC collector would be interested? Looks like it's been well used.

The one I found would be over 20 years old, your prototype was probably a Proto as a Barra Lure.
