Have come across a number of lures with a brown scum which is hard to remove.

Tried a few methods but wondered if there is something out there that does not damage the plastic/ paint work.

Warm water and soap just does not cut it

Recently tried the glass gleaners from Aldi, (Tissue style) still not removing  all the gunk.

Not keen to try Metho Petrol  Kero etc unless someone has had some success using same.

Metho will do it, for tough stuff a tiny bit of Isopropyl Alcohol, too much and it will remove paint as well.

At my once employment we used to use vinegar in the mechanical floor cleaners until the machines’ maker told us we had to use their products or they would cover the warranty- their concentrated stuff was not as good as the vinegar

John and others, I wrote this text a few years ago - still use it today

I have been faced with this dilemma a few times myself and found the softly, softly approach the best.

Get yourself some cotton buds and select an obscure area on your lure - say hook hangers.

These are a good place to attack as the repainters usually never bother to remove them and this will give you 'access' to a thinner covering of the foreign overcoating.

Would suggest the following solvents and in order:
1. Turps
2. Metho/kero
3. Thinners - general purpose
4. Thinners - acrylic/enamel
5. Acetone - nail poilish remover
6. Brake fluid - yes good old auto brake fluid
7. Graffiti remover - diluted
8. Paint stripper - VERY diluted and be extra gentle is this stuff is very corrosive

Simple method of dip n wipe with the cotton bud until you can start to remove the unwanted colour, BUT do not overwork a particular spot as you will soften the original colour.

I cannot emphasize enough that you need to take your time - try your different solvents in different areas rather than keep working the same spot with different stuff.

Have some fresh water handy to apply asap to minimise any unwanted or too aggressive solvents.

Tried the orange oil did not suit the scum.

Martin clear or brown vinegar, does it matter.

Thanks Wadey will have ago with the buds fortunately have a number  of lures to play with that will not be a worry to ruin , they have  reach that stage already,  so I can go in heavy and paint them black when finished.

Speaking of Black paint do you guys use that colour  lure often when fishing in your brown water up north, seems to work a treat down here when the water dirties up.

Thanks for the help everyone,

Regards John

Doesn't matter what vinegar John, the home brand stuff is just as good and the dearer stuff.

I use all colour lures in all colour waters. But I have had great success using black lures ion coloured and clear water.
