I scored a small unknown 3" green woody when I was last up my old hometown of Murwillumbah in northern NSW back June 2013.

Well back up here visiting mum n dad again for the past few days and passed around the green woody with the hope of a confirmed id.

I ran into one of my old school mates I haven't seen since I left school back in 1968 (yes I am THAT oldLOL) and buuger me, he has made timber lures for the past 30 years !!!!

Darryl Keevers, now in retirement after working in the saw milling industry for the past 35 years both here on the Tweed River and further inland near Lismore/Casino began fishing the local creeks for perch (bass) and then went on the chase mulloway from the breakwalls on many of the northern rivers of NSW.

As they say "Necessity is the mother of invention" and this rings true of Darryl, so using borrowed lures as a base idea, he began hand carving with small minnows of differing lengths, profiles and thicknesses as he chased bass and perch - all north coast red cedar.

A move closer to the coast saw the sizes seriously upgraded for jew of the rocky headlands and of course the river entrance breakwalls.

Some of the jew caught-  using a 12 foot beach road and 6 inch alvey -  were in excess of 60 pounds (30kg) and yes he still has all his fingers and knuckles.

A couple of standouts were a 44kg wahoo from the Tweed 9 mile reef and too many longtail tuna to mention.

His lures do not have names, nor are they sleek and pretty to the eye but they worked for him.

More than happy to re-make his acquaintance and a few sessions of rehydration are planned in the very near future as time and liver function permits.

Some pictures that I hope you enjoy and also may help to identify some unknowns ......

And yes, a few samples of his handiwork will shortly live in Shellharbour and no, I didn't identify my green woody - yet

Great story Gary, but I must ask you why you left a sub-tropical world, to live in the cold of Southern NSW? LOL I'm not being nosey, just can't understand why anyone would voluntarily live south of the Tropic of Capricorn Confused.
Regards, Seaweed.

Hi all,

Unfortunately Darryl Keevers passed away earlier this week from pneumonia.

Darryl had been in remission from lymphoma cancer for quite some time - but lost his battle.

I am sure if there is a chunk of wood around he will keep carving - RIP - Wadey
