Computer still out of action due to fall. New one hopefully will be ready over the weekend.

Finally the lake commenced to rise Monday.

Not sure if the Snowy is still taking water or not.

Last two days winds gusted to over 70 klms in our area according to my weather station.

Only two of us out there having a go. a visitor from Canberra and me.
Caught three in the conditions ,(in one hour 10 mins then strong winds and heavy rain arrived. pulled the pin)  gave the first one to the visitor (51cm) released the 59cm , measured only, just too lean. kept 49.6cm brown in good nick , for tea tonight.
All in the edges shallow dirty water, just slowed the retrieve down, using floating lures just over 2 grams a challenge to throw in the conditions.

Regards John

Blowing up a gale down there, you will need steel pegs to tie you down and did you get any snow too?

Did battle for three and a quarter hours this morning took two spinning out fits tried three different lures, did not see a fish or have one enquiry.
Braved snow, sleet, and light rain.

Warm and comfortable, very well rugged up..

Weather / water  conditions perfect
I wondered if trout full from yabbies after our spell of wild rough weather over the past three days

I get cold just looking at that photo.

John, are the yabbies dislodged from their hidey holes during rough weather making them easier prey? I would have thought most of them would be in burrows?

Ordinarily yabbies would be in near hibernation mode ... except that the winter months the lake is dropping fast due to the need to generate electricity. So yabbies' burrows get exposed by dropping water, leading them to continually relocate as they follow the lake down. They're exposed and easy pickings, and the margins are more comfortable environments for the browns due to the water temp. Win win, unless you're a yabbie.

I think JKR is on the money.

One of the locals also said they dig down deep when the water leaves, we sometimes see fox scrapings trying to dig them out.
Those fish caught in July had large volumes of small yabbies in their stomachs not sure how fast they grown or when they breed.

Caught a 53cm brown in the shallows ,dirty water and released two ,its flesh was a very deep orange but only had several older yabby remains in its stomach.
Met up with a fresh visitor from Canberra, we thrashed the water , (nearly 4 hours) cold south westerly blowing at the time.We covered nearly 3klms. I caught the fish in the rough water nearer the car.
My visit failed to find a fish.
We are experiencing a lack of interest in following the lures, let alone getting strikes.

Very difficult for anyone to launch a boat at our end of the lake.

Appeared as though several cars bogged around old Adaminaby yesterday after 50mls of rain.
Brave to travel over mud then.

I am keen to return to some fly fishing having acquired a great amount of gear on the off season.

Any suggestions for the wet fly that might be suitable.

My new visitor from Canberra, normally a fly fisherman is keen to try as well likely to return next weekend.

Regards John

We had our first snows for the winter period down to the 1000 metre mark this morning.
Winds were up and front moved through by mid afternoon with snow not in the trees or in the shade melting slowly.
Braved the elements and found two 52cm and 39cm browns had to cast into the wind, not much distance in the casts achieved,  both released.

Regards John

Nobody else present around the shore.

A little up date after some rain and snow we received in the area.

2.3. Portal flowing full bore at the moment.

 1. Visited Tantangara today new turning circle at boat ramp under water . Point just about disappearing

  4.  One of our snakes chasing an eastern grey has had a lean year.  View looking down the river       where the lake is commencing to refiill.

Possibly some good news for you Lake fisherman that come and visit this area.

Was told a couple of days ago that a proper boat ramp will be put into Tantangara  shortly.

Location not known but you would think down at the end of the lake where the dam wall is.

Intend following up to secure further info on this important move.

Hopefully will include toilet facilities as well.

Two days of snowy weather due even Canberra may  get a bit.

Four days without a fish they seemed to have closed down. Nothing on lures, nobody fly fishing at the moment Spoke to 7 lure fisherman all experiencing it tough. Not sure if the boys in the boats have done any better , so few trying.

Several bait fishing did better but put in very long hours, one party 2 fish five days.

Unfortunately Lake dropping again . Noticeable last couple of days

Anglers Reach this arvo steady snow most of the day will be interesting to see what has been received in the higher reaches tomorrow morning.

Winds gusting to 40-60 klms all day decided to hold my powder this arvo, just not worth getting bogged or blown into the lake.

-16 reported in the area on one of the local news but not at my level.

Regards John

We had a white dusting over night and this morning in our area but most of the snow had melted in the lower sections just after lunch.

Very strong winds and plenty of white caps , no boats ventured out today.

Spoke to some visitors whilst purchasing bread this morning, they had decided to leave due to the weather conditions they had bought two canoes up to fish in , and must not have checked the weather reports for the area  before leaving their homes.

They had also spoken to some mates who had fished during the  past five days for one fish.

Lake rising slowly.

Snow falling in the distance, the winds had eased and white caps  were commencing to disappear but still deep trough to contend with.

A visitor from Canberra and I fought the good fight till dark this evening and found three fish on lures , and  quite a few snags.

Light rain and bitterly cold winds blowing off the snow  kept us on  the move.

We were both very well rugged up, but just some of our exposed fingers  felt the cold.

Earlier this morning snow falling.

Regards John

Ex boss is at Threadbo, he posted up on Facebook last night that they got a good dumping of snow - happy because he snow boards.

Canoes in an alpine lake in winter??? Even in summer a dunking could be fatal.

Water temp according to a boater (two days ago ) sheltering from a big cold  blow, spray being lifted off the white caps, just too dangerous to fish in at the time was 6 degrees on his sounder.

Still averaging a couple of fish most evenings, condition needs to  improve. All released.
It is noticeable they are only hitting the lure after the sun has dropped down behind the hills, has to be really rough and dirty for them to be in the mood to belt the lure before hand.

Very rare to have a follow at the moment.

Three of us trying out our new fly gear this weekend. (I have a new 10ft sage to play with)

Bom  reports we are at 31.2 % currently, same time last year we were at 44.7%

That is a large amount of water missing
Checked Eucumbene River (without fishing gear, river closed) for any signs of fish movement. Not a sign  most  trout must have returned to lake.

Weakened, took the 6 weight out for (training purposes) last  night fished till it got dark covered a good area not one single enquiry.

Last trip fly fishing would have been mid May.

Just as the sun set ,picked up a 52 cm brown on a floating lure, still lean, but improving (released) the only enquiry for the trip.
Lures at the moment plastic floaters ,  2.8 to 2.6 grams to help avoid the snags ,tough to cast into the winds.
No boats and only one bait fisherman hard up on the shore wind in his back , love to know if he had a bite.
We touched 19 degrees yesterday  the first hot day here for months.

Six degrees is cold, John. I did a lap around Jindabyne two weeks ago and found water as cold as 7.75 degrees and as high as 8.25 degrees. Wherever the water was warmer, we caught fish. They were mostly caught deep and in good condition too.

John
All the reports around here suggest that the fish are still deep as well.

First sighting of the the bats returning last night.

Three fish moving on top ,  finally some surface action

Lost two on the lure but a mate caught a nice 60cm plus but released him , measured him along his rod and kept a small on in good nick.

First sighting of some flying insects and several moths . The two warm days we have had plus a 20C day today should continue to keep things moving.

Tried the fly but no action yet.

We found four fish   in the space of 50  yards off the shore which was a big improvement on recent efforts.

Regards John

Not mine Lean and mean (Released ) over 60cm
