Jindy fished well over Christmas - New Year. I did five morning sessions for sixty trout (mostly browns, but the odd rainbow, atlantic and brook chucked in for good measure), releasing 52.

There was a handful of reasonable rainbows amongst them, but I and a few other blokes I know have taken to releasing every rainbow we catch these days. The population has collapsed (including comparatively few turning up in the spawning run) and anglers should probably just return them safely until the population picks up again.

Anecdotal reports from people connected with Fisheries is that the number of rainbows taken in their spawn run fish traps has declined alarmingly.

Trapping the spawn run traditionally provides Fisheries with a lot of fertilised eggs for the hatchery, however numbers are way down (e.g. only 200 odd fish caught in total).

Informed theory says that eggs captured from wild fish and raised in the hatchery:
a) have a better strike rate, but
b) produce a less-resilient juvenile, and therefore
c) trapping more and more fish in order to address the decline in RT population in the lakes is actually creating the problem rather than solving it.

Fisheries have resorted to trapping creeks in Eucumbene because the RT Thredbo run is not viable.

I understand the importance of rainbow trout to the fishing/tourism industry in the Snowies, however NSW Fisheries and comps such as the Trout Festival should give some thought to temporarily protecting this species (e.g. C&R only) until there's some bounce back in fish numbers.

The last couple of seasons has seen a paucity of rainbow trout numbers in Eucumbene and Jindabyne. It is most evident across multiple trips and in events such as the Trout Fest. In the Trout Fest there's categories for brown trout and rainbow trout, and a lot of anglers have reported difficulty catching a weighable rainbow trout. When you get one of comp size, it's cause for celebration (followed by a swift whack between the eyes with a lump of wood).

That fact isn't lost of many forward-thinking anglers who know they need to kill the fish for comp purposes but recognise that in doing so they are becoming part of the problem. Personally I'd prefer it if anglers shared the responsibility for returning the health of the RT population, rather than just bitching about it and Fisheries in the same sentence.

For example, I reckon NSW Fisheries could make rainbows a catch and release target only in the Snowy Lakes for the next couple of seasons. And if that's too bitter a pill for government to consider, comps such as the Trout Fest should close the rainbow trout category for the next couple of years and divert the prize money into more categories for brown trout. I don't think many anglers would have a problem with that, especially if they see their longer-term interests are getting served by the intervention.

Thanks for the up date JKR.
Your trip to Jindy was very successful finding the right zone is very important, trolling over their heads
is a waste of time and effort.

Was the water temperature high whilst you were there.

We found 28.4 c down at the bass water on the coast last week.

That is Qld water temperatures.

I think there is a gathering /meeting coming up towards the end of January which fisheries are expected to be involved in.

At this early  stage I am not aware agenda set for the meeting.

Rainbow stocks are certainly of concern, we have released a number of small rainbows over the last few months, and have  rarely  caught a rainbow worth keeping.

I wondered if the number of smaller rainbows released in recent times is an indication of perhaps better  seasons to come.

Regards John

Hi John

21 degrees, from memory, and with fluctuations here and there with some parts of the lake being a little warmer than others.

if you get the chance, you might consider asking Fisheries whether they have considered a temporary ban on taking rainbow trout. If the Trout Fest committee is represented, they might be asked the same thing.

Food for thought.

Regards

Fly fishing top of Lake is still  R S.

No movement several regular fly fisherman resting till things improve.

I was out Sat night till the lighting took over and retired, just was not worth tossing a graphite rod around for little/ no result
We reached 37c very warm for us and a bit unusual.

Some of you venture up here from time to time.

Located this report through a friend.

If you have a little time on your hands (38 Pages)  you may find some of the information interesting.

Temperature 2.7 c this morning most unusual really for us at this time of the year.

Tantangara and Eucumbene falling ,overall fishing has not improved a lot at the moment.

Seeking assistance to transfer the file of 38 pages when my son is available to assist later in the day.

Report released November 2017.

Ventured up to Tantangara this arvo.

Road in first class order, not one single pot hole evident either way.

Edges cleared and gutters cleaned.

Calm and clear water dropped about 8 to 10 ft.

Had a visitor pass by just took some photos. Around 60cms but light on in condition.

Stood perfectly still, just like a dead tree.

Received this ,this arvo.

Maybe of interest to you guys in the Canberra area.

We do not have the problem in our immediate area at the moment.

Fishing from the shore still remains terrible.

Finally a miserable narrow brown caught on the fly in Yens Bay in the shallows  last night by a mate, around 40cm but very very narrow , poor condition, released.

No insect life on the water , no movement evident, but some bats returned the first I have seen since around Oct, or there abouts.

Attend our fishing meeting this arvo , no exciting catch reports received.
We have $11000 approx to improve the boat ramp at Old Adaminaby if the Lake continues to drop at the level it is maintaining at present before our winter starts.

Nice sunset the other night, the battle continues.

Given some spider mud eyes  a couple of days ago, moving to the dark side this week for a change.

Nice back yard to return to  nightly, just need a little action to be on hand.

Regards John

Hi Per

Checked the weather for our area  next five days.  10-11C  to 26C

The guys up North are doing it tough at the moment, High 30's C and early 40's C but their night time temps are the killers.

Someone is bound to lets us know what they are dealing with at the moment.

Very dry for us as well at the moment.

Weather Bureau slightly out in estimate for morning temp 4.8 C overnight.

Those camping around Tantangara would have been in for a surprise late night after our previous warmer temps.

Checked the Portal this arvo after returning from Talbingo and the flow from Tantangara has stopped once again.

Water from Lake  Eucumbene will now drop a lot faster

Fishing still remains difficult and evidently a thought provoking letter was published in the local paper this week.

Interesting to see what comes of it.

A  few photos for the locals in the area to up date the current  conditions.

Turning circle at Tantangara now well exposed for usage.

Water has now dropped below outlet

Area opposite the accommodation has no water only the river lightly flowing.

Regards John

Hi Dave and Per

Yes Dave Cramps bay has exposed the springs oozing out of the ground once again, the reason we think why we caught a number of fish when you visited on your previous trips.

Not the sort of place to get rid of cramps now, even with waders on.Wink

Per lake Eucumbene only reached a tad over 40 percent fill after winter.

Both Per due to the heat experienced the air conditioners have been running hot along the coastal flats around the country.

Frogs in my area did not breed again.

Water did not reach or cover the grass around the Lake.

Very few  new yabbiy holes have been exposed as the water drops.

Perhaps suggesting they stayed in the deeper water.

I have only spotted the small insect bats on two occasions this year, to sight any live insect life on top of the water is really rare.

Grasshoppers have no feed near the water.

The odd fish that has been caught is lean or small I just take a photo and release.

Finally we are having a bit of a blow (30 to 40 klms local.  Stronger winds higher up)  and a drop of rain last night and this morning.

Might switch them on this arvo.

Just need a good, solid, quality, raincoat over the waders.

Martins reports with his great variety of fish are a very welcome read.

Regards John

Handed a copy of the article recorded in local paper today.

Feeding them pellets all the time could cause problems when they are released.

Nothing outstanding in the fishing reports for the area.

Explored a bit of new territory last couple of days .

Mainly isolated river areas some distance from Adaminaby.

Found some extremely health frogs and tadpole areas , not normally located in my immediate area.

Fish were only small mid to late 30's.

A few of us were out last night in very pleasant conditions.

Four fly fishermen and two bait fishermen  One small trout caught for each group (mid 30's)

No fish moving on top, spotted only one insect floating on a calm surface, wind dropped out later in the evening, and then blew  in on our backs.

Headed off early head torches not required.

 Point shows wind still evident.

A local bait fisherman caught 6  browns  over night at  Tantangara in very rough conditions on worms several days ago..

Had a trolling trip yesterday morning little activity reported on sounders, tried a number of lures

bombs, and lead line not used on this trip..

A  long, well fed, red and black located in a heavily frog and tadpole area,

Regards John

Finally a decent fish after many  many trips

50.5cm. Caught on fly.

Fought well.

By the way a non breeder this year

Only contents in stomach was flying ants

Eucumbene 4  Mar  now 36% and dropping quickly.

Tantangara at the moment holding. 22%.

It has become noticeable visitor numbers have dropped off due to word of mouth, fishing trips to area have been poor.
Have not heard how Jindy as been fishing recently,  but early on they appeared to have a few problems as well.

Still touch and go Per

We have been waiting patiently for a mud eye hatch in the area without success for some considerable time.
One of my regular fly fishing mates found a shell on his front seat last night and on his dash board a dead dragon fly. The warm weather must been too much for him locked in the car.

We reasoned that it climbed up his waders whilst fishing , he was wading till dusk, moved on to his lambs wool seat covers and dried out

He travels to and from the Lake in his thigh waders.

Not so much as a touch last two nights for three of us fly fishing.

Regards  John

We had over 60 klms gust of winds today up at Eucumbene.

I and  two new mates (visitors) braved the conditions and covered a large area for one miserable fish.

We appeared to be the only ones out in our area.

Not suitable for boating today.

Conditions perfect, for spinning.

Unfortunately our fishing is in  big trouble at the moment..

My two new mates have fished for 16 days leave in five days, both   fly fishing and spinning. a total of twenty nine fish caught.

five kept, all the smaller ones up to 40cm released.

Best day just over 20 twenty caught and  one kept. at Tantangara.

Many days with zero results.

Put in 10 hours using their boat and moving to different areas to fly fish without results a couple of days ago.

They have  been coming here over 25 years 2 to three times a year plenty of experience and know all the bays by name.

For you locals we  recently walked from Two gates to Anglers Reach about seven klms  5 1/2 hours, they fly fished and I  lured.

One keeper and one released ,two small ones rolled only. Wind conditions made it hard to fly fish , and they failed to connect.

Needless to say  they slept well that night Walking and jumping over numerous dead trees in waders in 30 odd degrees tested them.

Tantangara the most successful water fished but a lot of smaller fish caught on fly and lures there.

Regards John
