Fellas I went off clips several years ago.  Now that I am back onto making lures again and I put on a clip to test a few in the pool, very convenient.

Just thought I would ask around what is the general opinion on clips these days?  They stay within the radius of the bib so not too obvious.

I am mainly fishing for Bass, Goldens and a possible Cod.

On very small lures I don't use clips, otherwise it's just a flip of the coin for me. But I only go for good quality clips when I do use them.

Have no faith in any cheap choinese snaps, whatever style and brand on the packet, had too may failures over the years.

These days I tend to stick with Lefty's loop knot on small lures, Only ever used Cordell Duo Lock clips in suitable sizes for Bass size and bigger lures, when they became hard to find, I swapped to Decoy Egg Snaps, ultra strong but pricey.

I dont use clips during the day, especially for bass as the water is generally very clear. I do use clips sometimes at night especially when bank fishing as I will change lures more often and its dark anyway (yet to see a fish sporting night vision gogglesWink) I find that my bass fishing is mainly with wake baits/shallow lures and by tying the lure with a tight knot allows me to position the knot up high or low on the lure towpoint which effects if the lure runs just under the surface causing a wake or runs a bit deeper depending how I want it to run. Other than that I use a loop knot to free the action up.

For most lure casting (in Nth Qld) I use snaps...makes changing lures quick and easy. Can only recall one fail where the clip opened under load...with a golden trevally and lodged in the fish's mouth...lost the jig, but got the still got the fish...very lucky. I sometimes use pliers to squash the clip down a bit, prior to use.

Hi Gordon,
I always use a clip...........day or night.....this allows me to change lures regulary/quickly, to suit the occasion without wasting time.
most of my fishing is from kyak or bank, though i still use these clips trolling, or dropping baits offshore, i just put the hook to suit the occasion.
I do not believe there is an advantage to tying knots, nor does a suitably sized clip, change the action of a lure enough to be a problem.
Ive tested it all in a pool, and i do not see a difference that jumps out at me.
If a lure is placed in the zone, a clip will not stop the fishes natural instincts....which is too hit it.
If its a quality clip.......it will not fail.....the line will break first.
These clips are available from tackle unlimited, they are 20mm and 10mm.......
I use them on surface lures with no ill effect......though walk the dog lures i do do a knot.
my lures average 30mm to 50mm and i see no change in their action when using them, and they handle quality size fish......never had one let me down.

If I use a clip, it has to be of the cross-lock style.

They are the duksnuts steiny.....and fairly well priced considering the ease of use.
you will notice the gap on the line end......only some have it....i just crimp it up with pliers gently.

I Forget the rating, but way above what is needed(your line will break first), they cannot open or stretch due to the pressure point, ive got cod up to 10 kilo on the smallest size(not ideal!) but still didnt fail!
and the lure moves freely

Darren, my mate uses that style of clip. I was a bit dubious at first but he's landed some good barra on the small ones with no dramas!

Great info fellas, I am blown away by this website.  I thought the majority did not use clips anymore.

That is an interesting design Jas, if they can land a Barra then they are proven in my ratings.

Back to the work bench.

Only my opinion Gordon, loop knot for my wife's barra/jack lures.
In past 2 years have seen at least 3 friends in my boat loose at least 5 very decent barramundi on varying clips they have had tied on.
Cheers jono

I have a few sizes in these. First introduced to them at Monduran, they called them Hawaiian's. If you study the configuration they should be bullet proof.  But with all clips I guess give it a bit of slack you don't know which way it's facing. Thanks fellers.

Hawaiian's are excellent. I have been using them for years. BCF sell them but i have just started using ones made by Arafura Tackle. They seem to be as good but a bit cheaper.

those clips you posted up come in an ulta small for flyfishing too Nicho, they are very good.i'll use clips with some species of fish but not others for instance i'd use a loop knot for fussy fish like trout or Bream but i'll use a snap for bigger less fussy bruisers like Mackeral (has to be a strong clip nuff said) and flatties.lure size has some bearing on whether to use snaps too as a snap can make the lure look bigger in some circumstances

Always use clips now because i tend to change lures a lot.
But only use the quality stuff. Have used some cheap clips and have lost some good fish and lures.
Cheers

Always use clips and like the expensive Japanese ones that have a plastic sleeve over the wire. Can't remember what they are called. Advantages of clips is that they give extra length to stop teeth, ease of changing lures. Loop knots for me just don't cut it and actually need to be regularly re tied as the friction of the eyelet moving actually weakens the loop. Occasionally I will tie direct to the eyelet for finicky trout but still find a fish does not get spooked by clips/snaps if its hungry and you present your lure in the right spot - as a friend of mine used to say - throw it in the fishes mouth son . . .

I use clips on lures most of the time.
Sometimes I will use a loop knot in some applications.
Heavy duty Crosslock snaps as well as Speed Clips are excellent.
I use them for everything from PNG Bass,Sooty Grunter,Barra,GT and Queenfish with no problems.
I can't remember the last time I lost a fish to a snap opening.
If you use a snap directly onto a lure there is always the possibility you will one day loose a fish due to that.
If you do not want to risk loosing a fish from a snap opening then tie directly to it.

For freshwater and estuary,Bill Norman Speed clips.

Most tackle shops stock them but, from the States is if course much cheaper.

I use clips for all freshwater lure fishing - use the high quality ones and throw them away if they become stretched. I don't use Norman clips because spinnerbaits work their way loose and fall off. The only time i don't use clips is dam fishing for big barra.

For breaming and applications where the weight of the clip can impede the lure's action, the little Japanese figure of 8 clips work well. Regards, Ken.

I used Speed clips for years until I lost two lures at Leslie Dam while trolling for Yellas. It was an unfortunate combination of lure action, troll speed and angle of the line... Shocked The lure I was using had quite a pronounced wide sway and when all the factors lined up, the clip opened and the lure sank to the bottom!! Cry I didn't realise what had happened and put another lure on (the same type) and within 5 minutes, the same thing happened! Sadly both lures were sinking ones. I still use them occasionally, but only on lures with a tight action... Wink

Im afaid im one of the clipless ones, I change lures a fair bit, but I also usually takem4 rods rigged ready to go. I can tie a loop knot really quickly, and they never fail, and fhey dont effect the action of lures at all, I can also tie a new leader on pretty quickly, and often go through 2 to 3 on slow days.
I have used clips, and although I dont mind them, I prefer the loop of nylon.
Really good loop knot for those interested, is just amplain old uni knot, when you tighten it, just poke a finger in the loop and tighten both the knot, and give the tag a really good pull, I use my teeth. It dosnt lock 100%, But at worst, if it slips, it just pulls down like a regular uni, just have to re tie it if you get snagged or a better than average fish.....never ever failed, and I used it with all my cliants. I have seen cliants lose fish because of clips failing.
