To extend on the WD40 theme, might try worcestershire sauce. It's got anchovies and garlic in it.
Just a thought.

Red Hunter & Mr Viper suggest I should use it on my knees. Will this encourage 'Ankle Biters' when I'm wading the flats??? |

I know blokes that spray their baits and lures with WD40 as a fish attractant. It is made from fish oil plus other things. They always seem to outfish most other people but if this is because of the WD40 I don't know.

Bob when I fished for gummies in between the Henty rivers back when you could take five each
I was fishing with 2 mates either side of me in a big gutter We all used the the cheep wooden popper in the top of our hook set up But I was a bit sneaky and dipped my popper in tuna oil every time I would rebait the hooks The score at the end of the day was Rick 11 Troy 3 and I felt sorry for Garry let him drag in 1 on my line But they made me swap positions as well and I still out caught them I'm certain it was the sent as we all used the same bait I did not tell them my trick till we got back and were filleting the fish That's just a idea for you all to chew on Cheers Rick |

brother-in-law and myself were fishing McIntyre brook once. using worms for bait I caught four yellas in four baits in about 15 minutes, peter had not lost a bait. we were sitting side by side, fishing the same hole, same spot same bait. in two hours I got nine yellas, peter got none. he even changed his untouched bait. he smoked rollies all his life, his fingers are dark brown from toobaco stain. it's the only thing we could think of.......mick

The scent disperses in the water, right???
You move your lure, right??? Lure is no longer in scent trail, right??? If lure sits still in plume of scent, it may enhance strike rate! Try this! Go for a run. Run past a Café, Juices flow! Chase waiter who carries your Coffee, Toast, Whatever! Take note if Juices still flow!!! Agreed, scents can't hurt. Poor thinking to suggest they make a measurable improvement. Advertising garb is just advertising garb! My thoughts ONLY! |

Good read fellas and as Howard (Muckawa) said a burley trail. I have seen that many times.
There is another factor that we need to be aware of is the type of fish. Tailor don't care they will hit some plumbers tape when they are on the chew. Many years ago we we're on the Daly River fishing with a guide, (back when I could afford it,) and I put to him the idea that the scent on your hands may chase a Barra away. He said you can have suntan lotion, sandfly repellant, hand cream the lot and Barra will still hit your lure. That's all okay but there a lot of fish species that I would not try that with. I would rather drop a worm scented lure out onto the sand flats, trying for flathead than one that may have insect repellant smell. Regards Gordon

Totally agree Brad, Gulp is bait, soft plastics are in between, and I've no problem with them and do stoop to putting gunk on occasionaly. The comps where "Gulp" was and is the gun "lure?", I question, but big bucks buy trends. I can say that now, I'm not in the tackle industry. I think we've been through discussion this many times, so don't worry about answering my ravings. Each to their own.

That's why I always refer to using Gulp as 'bait fishing' even admitted to it during comps...'yeah it was tough today, ended up getting them all on bait' Trev, young Andy Orr told me a lil' story one day when he was up the sunny coast...he and his mate went for a morning fish before work, fishing the same snag, with the same softies, same jigheads..all same same. Andy was catching fish, but his mate was only getting nibbles, after 30mins he was starting to bitch... Andy said "what did you have for dinner?' mate replied 'I did a chilli beef stir fry' Andy 'did you cut everything your self?' mate ' yeah of course' Andy ' stick your finger under your tongue and tell me what you taste' ol mate...'mmmf I taste chilli!!!! Andy 'swing your lure over here' ol mate does and Andy rerigs the jig and softie. ol mate casts it back to the snag and starts getting solid takes that was enough for me... Brad |

Mid-winter last year I pulled 14 Barra ( 82cm - 115cm ) from the fresh water section of the Ross River in Townsville . The biggest on a 5'' Bozo , the rest on 5'' Storm suspending shads , all smeared with a good coat of S-Factor . I might have caught them without the attractant , but using it didn't hurt in my opinion .

well if you watch fish swim up behind a lure and and wonder why it didn't strike
look at the under side of fresh water fish. orange fins .red fins.white fins , those scented pens will put fin stripes were there needed , most dumb Australian lure makers dont put fins or strippes on the underside of their lures, yanks do 3D printing on their lures with fins bait fishing works much better with burly in the water when bank fishing a little burly in the waters edge , often ,will see many small fish swimming about were the burly has been applied, using scents as burly will soon tell you which ones work , some are BS the floppy has a plug in its head for adding scent fly fishing at Oberon years ago a old bloke fishing with me was catching fish after fish , when ask why , as he didn't cast often, he said that he looks for bugs in the waters edge and squeeze them over the fly i got the burkley red dye to colour live yabbies red for use on trolling spinner baits , i've had cod up beside the boat too big to lift , trolling speed 1.5km/p/h, hang onto the rod , to feel the take but Queenslanders have red claw, no need to brighten them up tried the fluro dip , works on soft plastics , but not sure on other baits

Another great alternative to garlic spike-it spray is the garlic infused olive oil spray from coles or woolies. At 5 bucks a can, its way cheaper, smells the same, lasts just as long, and you have always got oil for the BBQ back at camp!!!

I too have heard that a simple paste made up of Vasoline, garlic and a fish scent of some kind (shrimp paste, tuna oil ect) works pretty darned well. A cheaper alternative to Gulp juice that's for sure.

Darby is on the right track, I have heard that a few times.
I try to remember to wash my hands in the mud on the shoreline before I fish and also give my lure a dunk in the mud or sand. Also I have heard that Gulp ( juice ) is very good. The lures I make these days ( timber ) I am now drilling a 5/6 mm hole through the body. From one side to the other, then paint, making sure the hole is coated as well. This is to insert a bit of burley, prawn, squid, beach worm, gulp juice or road kill, whatever. The idea is to lay a trail of scent behind the lure. Too often I get more bumps than hook ups. We will see what happens. Gordon |

I have out fished a mate on a few accasions useing the same bait as each other side by side but I did not tell him I kept dipping my popper feathers in tuna oil when I went to check my bait he even made me give up my spot as he thought I was sitting in the gutter better while we were fishing for Gummy and black back.
Even after we changed posi I still kept reelin them in , I did not tell him for about 3 trips but now he does the same trick. It must make a difference on a lure you would think. Does any one know of a lure that has a blood capsule in it ? A friend said he seen it on fishing WA or a show like river to reef but was not sure on the show. But said when you load it in it breaks the capsule to leak a trail of blood slowly behind the lure Rick
