Here are some of mine. These are a great bass lure with the fizzbanger accouting for many a bass. For a couple of seasons it was my go to surface lure with a very slow retreive that just cranked over the blade.

Alistair a few years ago I went to Thailand for a holiday and got to fish a few days in freshwater (stinking water really). It seems a lot of old tin mines fill with water and are stocked with giant catfish, pacu, gourami, arapaima, tillarpia, snakehead, hampala barb, giant herring etc.

I'd read somewhere that pacu feed on fruits that fall from rainforest trees and that they have a passion of orange colours. Anyway, I used a Tiny Nugget in that orange pattern shown in your photo and was told by the guide I was wasting my time. Five minutes later the guide, who had not bothered to stay with me out of disgust, had to run around the margins to help me land the dumbest giant gourami I've ever seen! When hooked this thing swam full pelt and head first into a rock. When weighed it hit 5kg not bad for a tourist.

Regardless, the guide paid me more respect afterwards. Throughout the day I continued to alternate between bait and lures and although I hooked up to three snakehead on lures I did not manage to land a single one. Just wait till next time!

Great story Ropes, I'm glad to hear the guide came round - perhaps he should have been paying you for teaching him to match the hatch! LOL

I just did a little research on the Giant Gourami at the link below, going on that you certainly managed to nail a good one! Clap

Tony,

Check out the link for the giant snakehead on the paged you linked to. Now that's the fish I want! You should see these things in the flesh..........very nasty beasties!

And arapaima, well I'm too scared to go for them a six foot fish that leaps repeatedly and when all is done you have to pay A$250 whether it is released or not. Apparently they have a slow survival rate after release, so the guide told me.

The giant catfish are good fun too. Strange using thongs & wire floats filled with bread and the dreaded banana. My biggest so far is only 25kg, but they get way bigger than this though.

Bummer about the stinking water bit, other than that it sounds great fun!

Actually some fo the water I fished was clean, but most of my fish came from the waterways in and around Phuket Zoo. As the animal poo washed in there it was very smelly! But the fish apparently grow very quickly in that environment.
