Here a lure I got this week. It is a Barra Bug and whilst I thought it was urathane, now I have it in hand I am not so sure. I did the hot pin test and cant get it to go into the lure. There are no mould lines on it, the bib appears to be hand cut and the hangers are twisted wire (which he may still do today?). The bib is cut deeper and is longer than current made ones as well. Apparently is is one of the first of the clear bib models. Anyone have an idea on it or have any of his other divers to put up ( Jewbug, Mantis etc)

Good morning Alistair
Barry told me about that trick to determine wood V plastic. Not sure I'd be game to risk damaging a lure. I am certainly not experienced with wood lures like you .. Does Eurathane/plastic construction usually have lighter weight for size than wood? Would an X ray like Barry oranizes help determine materials used? later wayne |

I am very careful re the pin. I insert it at the back at the hook hanger where there is often a gap in the paint and angle it down beside the wire. Softyly softly. The weight can be very hard as many lures were made from light timber such as cedar and the weight , when transfered over to plastic/urathane is often very similar. I dont think an x-ray would help in this case with urathane lures, plastic moulded yes.

Id say it is Timber as most of his molded lures have a name molded on the bottom of the lure |

Thanks Dave, got this back from the seller after asking. A great pickup if timber. At some stage I can ask the maker when I catch up with him anyway. Always better to have a lure turn from plastic to timber than the other way hey
"The eyelets seemed twisted to me and there is no seam from what I could see- it was one of the originals when they were first made and I took them to Darwin very early. I showed Paul Topp the lure and he thought it was timber but hard to call- the lure dates to about 93 I think. If I had to make a call I'd say it was timber- "

Thanks Brolly Thats great news, as I said to Dave, it's not often that our lures turn from plastic to timber, normally it's the other way

As is so often the case when you pick up one of a lure more seem to come your way. These are now my collection of 7. The 3 large on the right are timber (2 are 3 hook hangers and the front is a squarer shaped 2 hook hanger with metal bib) and the 2 small ones (mantis) and the 2 Barra on the right are early hand signed Urathane. Had to move some lures around on the hanging net to make room for the new ones

Just wandering thru a Tackle Shop last week (as you do) and spied either 2 or 3 Bills Bugs on the rack. One was a large bladed fizzer type around 4" if not 5" and the second was of his above pictured bibbed divers in 'elton john' or similiar flouro pink etc. Ticketed prices $17 ?? Comments please if I should part with the necessary coins to have them live here with me??? or are they still reasonably available in other geographic parts. wadey |
