Hi Guys
Been lurking in the shadows for a while and figured time to post a few Im working on. Only a beginner but have managed to catch the lure making bug about 4 months ago and been working steadily toward understanding this fascinating hobby. (Doing my head in) Like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone on this site, the information is simply fantastic and the fact that a lot of you guys part with that info is just great. The lures are 90mm and 130mm plus bib and full wire construction. A mixture of Meranti and selected Pine. Saving the good timber for when the mistakes slow down.......

Not too long way of a go - great shapes and top paint, the only thing to get there now is the acid test on the fish, but I don't think that is going to be too much of a hurdle

Really good for first attempts! Way better than the first 50 i tried!
hint with full wire.... leave a fair bit of timber at the tail, that is the weakest part, not a lot of glue holding the wire in there mate. By making the tail a tad thicker, you will have a deeper groove for more glue over the wire. try this test. make 2 lures the same, through wire one, and use twists on the other. Then with a pair of pliars, after a couple of days for the glue to cure properly, pull the tail hook hanger from the bottom, towards the nose, see which one is stronger! |

Hi Dave, thanks for the comments. Funny you should mention the strength of through wire compared to pins. The only reason I have gone for full wire was due to peer pressure seemed that every one I spoke to said it was better than using pins however, I tried to pull a pin from the tail of an earlier model the other day using pliers and I have to agree with you. I grunted and groaned, pushed, pulled and twisted and only managed to snap the stainless due to consistent bending. So yes there is definitely merit in what you say. Thanks for the advice its appreciated.
Cheers Mike

At this time of the year, many jacks will be heading around the river mouths - that's where I reckon he has gone - Tweed walls.

Hi Guys. Your almost right Martin well the Tweed part anyway. I was actually fishing off Barney's Point from the rocky outcrop in the Tweed River, and Dave absolutely satisfying, to not only catch a few but to know they actually work. We managed four Big Eye on the second night but only one Jack the first night. So now its back to the workshop to address a few issues with the lures that will make them even more fishable. Many thanks for the interest guys its all appreciated.
Cheers Mike
