I was cutting a piece of old Oregon Pine yesterday to see if it was okay for nude lures. To my surprise, I found it had been attacked by some type of borer! Shocked The holes are almost perfect circles with a liner similar to enamel... Also traces of egg shells attached to the walls. Any budding entomologists out there??

I just remembered where I found that piece of timber! It washed up on the beach here. That's probably why it smelled so fishy... Ermm Some type of marine borer... Glad it wasn't termites!!! Shocked

Shipworm or Teredo Worm

Teredo navalis

Shipworm.jpg

the 'egg' is actually the halves of the plate it uses to burrow sort of like teeth. The 'enamel' coating is a calcium like material exuded by the worm.

Ian, once they are out of water for more than 6 days they are generally dead as. If there is no worm in there its all over red rover. They don't lay eggs in timber but eat it for B'fast/lunch/dinner.

Would have made for a smelly brazier Dead

"Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.”  Classic Beatles!  "A Day in the Life".

Not sure how you would carve a lure from that piece of timber, Ian, but I'm looking forward to seeing the end result. Big smile

Cheers

Travers
