I went for a quick paddle this afternoon as a big storm was passing across the south east side of Canberra. The golden perch are around, however lovely cod continue to hit the small lures designed for the goldens. I was really happy to get this little thumper on the particular Jinjulu pictured, as it's one of my favourite paint jobs. The fish wasn't removed from the water. A quick couple of snaps and it charged off.

Cheers,

Danny.

Thanks Graeme, it was a solid fish. In the future I'll be doing my best to leave any fish I intend on releasing in the water. You can still get a great photo of them in the water and I've noticed the way they charge off once I release my light hand grip is substantially better. Maybe something to think about for other fishos if they plan to let go what they catch.

Cheers,

Danny.

I ducked out for a quick paddle after work this evening. The easterly was quite strong and cold. The fishing however, was great, which is the trend I've started to notice in regards to Canberra's local lakes over the last couple of years. 6 Goldens were released, with the largest in the mid 40's. The ultra deep baby Merrit with it's very high frequency was extremely effective. I'll be carving quite a few of these for Summer and Autumn. One of the best parts about fishing in Canberra is the natural landscape that becomes engulfed by beautiful lighting at night. This becomes very useful as a bearing once it is dark.

Cheers,

Danny.

Hi Wadey,

Really glad you like them mate. Sorry it took so long - just missed the window to get them to you before you left for the expo and I've been a bit slack the last few weeks. Those 3 (other than the Parramatta job) are the only 3 lures where I have sprayed a colour pattern more than once.

Graeme I don't think so either - glad it's going to Wadey's shelf

Cheers,

Danny.

Beautiful (a) fish and (b) lures. Great work Danny.

I know that C&K cod fishing polarizes people so I'll essentially avoid commenting on it here, but it is heartwarming to see your approach to C&R that treats this wonderful species with the respect it deserves.

Good on you!

John

Hi John.

Mate glad you like the lures, many thanks. There's no solid evidence of them breeding in our local lakes as far as I'm aware. If there was, to any significant level, I would not fish them at all until December. The Bidgee around Canberra as you know is a different story. It's getting towards the upstream limit of their distribution, mostly affected by temperature. We are so lucky to have this at our doorstep - I can't work out why people fish it this time of year and run the risk of catching one while they are trying to spawn or tend to their eggs. Glad to hear you share some similar views re: C&R.

Cheers,

Danny.

Love the Blue & Yellow Lure Danny, so not sure what Graeme is talking about! Wink
Sure the beats the all the Wooden spoons people have given me in recent years and wouldn't be ashamed to display the "Merrit!"

But I may be slightly biased as a One eyed Eel supporter.

I've been able to get out for a paddle the last couple of afternoons/evenings. The local lakes around Canberra are fishing really well. Last night I explored a bit on LBG and picked up half a dozen goldens in some nice new locations.

This evening I headed out with Phil to a different location and picked up quite a few nice cod while fishing for goldens with small lures.

Phil got a nice fish on one of the first Jinjulu lures I made earlier in the year.

I managed a nice 50cm+ golden and smaller cod on an ultra deep baby Merrit.

However the stand-out lure this evening for me was the purple and blue laced Gimlet, which after landing a nice little cod ~45cm, produced a 104cm beast.

Cheers,

Danny.

Spectacular Danny.

It's a pity Canberra's urban lakes are no good and are only full of carp, huh?

Great looking lure; even better looking fish! Well done.

Thanks guys.

Graeme it was a very placid model considering it went into the net very green. It was great to get up close to it in the water and watch the massive bow wave as it cruised off back over the weed bed.

John there is some incredible fishing around Canberra. I've done numerous trips to Burrinjuck and found that I could have caught just as many quality fish 5 minutes down the road. There's plenty of stocked populations to keep anglers more than occupied this time of year while the delicate wild river populations should be left in peace to spawn.

Pip thanks for your help mate, it would have been difficult to get a nice photo of it in the water on my own.

Cheers,

Danny.

Matt - really happy with how they are holding up. I was wondering if I should have pinned the bib shortly after I realised the situation I was in, but it all stayed rock solid.

Thanks Alistair, think I'll retire this lure.

Finally got out for an early morning paddle today - Phil brought his oldest out too and she had a great time, bagging the biggest golden of the morning at around 45cm. We ended up with half a dozen goldens and I managed a nice 70cm+ cod on a baby Merrit.

Zoë and I drove to the top section of the Clyde River and went for a paddle. It was more of a partner friendly trip and I didn't want it to be all about fishing however there were still some chances to ping out a surface lure here and there. There were some very nice bass around, and a couple of the surface hits on the baby Plunketts were as big as I've ever seen. It's a beautiful part of the world so catching a few wild bass including one very nice one is just a bonus.
