Hey everyone.

Any of you living near the coast happen to have noticed if your local tackle stores still stock decent Luderick and surf rods? I'm talking the old school 10'6 - 12' rods such as Snyder Glas, Butterworth, Wilson etc. I know there's still some decent Wilsons around from time to time. Some of the others would have to be new old stock I'm guessing. They're something you don't see much of in stores anymore. Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Danny.

My nephew got a 13'6" surf rod & Alvey for Xmas. It's a Gary Howard. Similar construction to Snyder Glas. They are a quality rod. I have an 8' myself. Available here in SE Qld. I'll take a photo if you like?

Thanks guys.

Yeah Shane that would be great thanks mate. The two stores in Canberra that used to have a great selection don't have anything anymore.

Cheers,

Danny.

Thanks Nicho.

I've been reading a bit about them. Looks like there's a Luderick model he makes. Will hopefully be able to source it and might just take a risk on it without seeing it or picking it up.

Cheers,

Danny.

i dont think you will be disapointed mate, hes been around for many moons and makes rods to fit the occasion and they are above average for off the rack rods.
if you look him up on the net i reckon you could possibly order direct

Cheers,

Danny.

I'm no expert on Gary Howard's rods ... however I will say that there's often a significant difference in the build quality of a rod "built by" rather than "designed by" a named person.

I've got a Gary Howard "Dart". Light surf 11'6" or so. Nice rod, well made and finished.
The blanks might not be quite to the standard of the old Snyder Glas or Butterworth's but they do seem to be a well designed rod.

That's a great looking rod Shane, can you get it for a spin?  Also what size lure weight and sinker can you use on it?

Cheers,
Dave

Sorry Dave, I can't help you much with details. It's a really light rod for whiting & bream. I bought it at BCF Toowoomba a few years ago. I assume my nephew got his at Charlton's at Redbank QLD as his Dad seems to have his own carpark there, or so it seems!

Thanks Shane, Nicho, John and Dave for your input.

Shane that rod looks nice. I'll see how I go sourcing one of Gary's.

Cheers,

Danny.

John where is a time machine I can jump into? I like the distinct lack of multiple brand names covering everyone's attire the most I think.

Well written Danny.
Not a Daiwa/Shimano/BCF, shirt/hat/jacket to be seen.
Best of luck finding the rod you are looking for. Hope we helped a bit.

Hence my saying underneath "you don't have to be pretty to fish". Now a days I have a few branded shirts due to the sun protection factor and I got them free or very cheap.

No worries Shane will do. I'm liking the sound of his rods more and more as I look into them.

Nice one Martin!

Danny.

A mate wouldn't fish with anything else but his Black Queen as a teenager for no matter what species from whiting to sharks.
