I have only ever done one coating. are you guys putting it on really thin, and that's why you do multiple coats?
I have brushed mine a little thinner recently, putting it on good and thick to cover and then brushing excess off to take it thinner. but I used to just put a heavy coat on and let it smoothen out on the turner, and it worked great, with a deep, clear coat. what benefits are there to doing multiple, thin coats? as opposed to one, thicker coat. something I did learn, that I had to correct, was that my clear-coat was changing my lure's action, from when I tested them. my lures aren't using lips, but instead a dished cup/face. when I was putting my e-tex on thicker, it obviously changed that dish shape and screwed up the action on the odd one. so now I make sure to brush the cup fairly thin. I would like to try adding a second coat to my lures. on the single coat, when the glitter is added, it then adds that bit of texture, etc to the exterior. it might be nice to add that baby-smoothening coat on top of that. but I wouldn't be able to sand between the coats. is that an issue? |

so, one coat, fully cure it, then just brush on a second coat?
add glitter, etc on the first coat, correct? and use the second coat to cover that all smooth again. I've seen where guys have painted on top of the clear, above their main paintjob. assuming that is on the first layer and then covered over again with later layer/s of clear. does paint generally adhere well to e-tex? any paints to avoid? |

One coat, 8 hours later second coat goes on. Add decals etc. before first coat, be sure to seal first as the Etex will ruin any unsealed decals, hand writing etc. Add glitter etc. to first coat, second over the lot. The second coat is the last thing to be applied to mine so I can't comment on paint over Etex.
Re the 8 hours between coats.....I'm operating in temps of 30° C and above at all times, so that time may differ for you....

thanks for the info guys.
I just remembered that I keep all the hardened e-tex from in the little cups I mix up for doing lures. I don't know why, I guess I figured a use for them would come about. and it has, I will test some paints on them first. what is best for cleaning the lure's first coat of e-tex for the next coat of e-tex? most of mine have already been handled a lot, etc. I better do a good cleaning to any I plan to add another coat to. |

I give them a quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol or spray with Ardrox Pre-Cleaner.

wow.
I was able to get another few lures finished yesterday. well, finished as far as I have been finishing my lures. one coat of e-tex has always done the job. just that single coat is amazingly more than the "professional" wooden plugs that are being manufactured here. they have a thin layer of auto that is about the thickness of a paint layer. really just a sealing on the paint so it doesn't wash off I guess. so I have been more than happy with a good layer of e-tex on my lures. I couldn't understand why guys are doing 2-3 and even more coats, that just seemed like such overkill. especially with the time it takes for one coat to be finished. but a recent lure I made, finally made me go to an extra coating. it's a combination painted/nude. I have made others, but I didn't realize the difference between them until I started applying my e-tex. this one was a cedar plug, not my usual wood that I have went out and found. way, way more porous, and the clear just absorbed right in on the nude areas. so I instantly realized this one would require an extra coat of clear. so, when I was doing this latest batch of lures, I added that painted/nude to the batch and applied that 2nd coat of clear to it. wow, it just added so much to the plug. the extra smoothness and depth just make it pop. I knew it would make a plug look better, getting a smooth coating over the glitter, which roughens the finish when added. but that hasn't really bothered me much. I don't sell my lures, so i'm not overly concerned about hooking a customer, I just need/want my plug to get those fish. I know the fish don't care. but man, now that I've done one with extra clears, they are sooo sweet. I will definitely be rummaging through the box and finding some I want to add another coat to. it could possibly affect my actions somewhat. that is something I will have to watch for. my lures don't have a lip, so my action is all dependant on the lure's shape. i'm not adding an extra coat to the cup/face. I already learned I needed to thin the clearcoat there, that really killed the action on a couple that I had been too generous with my clear. so it will still be a test to see if any action is changing with an extra layer of clear. but I will maybe go to thinner applications. I will brush that first layer a little thinner, add any extras to it(glitter), then when I add that second coat, it will be thinner as well. trial and error, i'm sure that will be the way. there's no real learning otherwise. |

hey.bb,I use 3-5 coats e-tex on pike lures for added protection from teeth, does mean I have to design the lure with taking that into account. This is a glitter pattern I make with the painting done over 1st and second layer of e-tex over glitter. .

I apply multiple coats of Etex because I love the deep, lustrous gloss finish multiple coats give.

Not much beats a thick glass smooth clear, Beer Breath it gives a depth to all that hard earned detail paint and the textures applied I do not rub my lures back to a 400 grit finish befor undercoats instead I use the sanding line for detail by using fine mists from a well setup airbrush sprayed at very low angles 90 degrees to the sanded lines makes for nice fades I have even stabed or rolled lures over 40 grit for spots But this only works with clears that are over 95% solids in 2 coats or one coat with 100% solids
I like my clears ,like my women Thick And yes the back of my head,, is shaped like my wifes palm
