    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 at 12:17am
Hi all,

Taking off on a boys trip with my Dad and Brother tomorrow in search of natives (mainly Murray Cod) in the Tenterfield / Deepwater area throwing lures. Not planning to fish dams just the rivers and creeks on foot. Where we can access them. Only have a limited amount of time and would really appreciate any pointers from those in the know in that area and also local lure makers we could call in on to boost our tackle supplies. Heading through from Central Queensland and will be coming in from Toowoomba direction.

Thanks

"Fish N Bits" on Alderly St Toowoomba usually have some local timber lures. Also a good spot to ask for advice. Good luck, post some photos when you catch a few!

I am not much help with fishing location advice but "Fish N Bits" in Alderley St, Toowoomba has a
great range of lures suitable for the fishing you are doing and should also be able to offer some advice on areas to fish.
Also "The Open Range" in James St, Toowoomba carry a range of lures suitable for your fishing including a great range of Lobby's lures.
Ask to speak with Wade (Cod Hound Lures) as he has fished those areas a lot with Cod Hound Kayak Tours and should be able to offer you good advice.
Hope this helps, have a great trip!
Cheers, Graham.

You say near Deepwater? If you turn left off the highway heading south just past a row of highway shops at Deepwater, Emmaville is only 26kms., there you can fish and purchase Deep River and RiverKing lures from the pub. Both makers live in town.

Fish n bits in Toowoomba done and dusted. Definately worth calling in for a chat and grabbed a few for the box. Next stop Tenterfield tackle then on to Deepwater. Will be sussing out Emmaville over the coming days as well. Thanks for the info so far guys.
Definately keen for any more info

Call into Stanthorpe and see Les Barlow 22 Macgregor Street - he has a little “ lures “ sign out the front. I’ve caught a few cod in the creek in town and Les will tell you that as well.

We are in drought conditions and finding water is the problem. Rivers and streams not running.
Emmaville for Deep River lures but Don Lawson doesn't make River Kings as anymore. They are made in Casino by Darren Macqueen.

Pretty happy with that effort.

You have done well. I have a mate that has been trying to catch a cod for years. We even catch cod around him and he still hasn't produced one.

About 25 years ago, I put together a 'mud map', for the Tenterfield Information Centre, to help visitors locate public reserves on the  Tenterfield Creek, Mole River, Deepwater River and Severn River.

To my great surprise, they are still handing out those mud maps!  Might be worth grabbing one and hope those areas are still accessible.

Well all good things must come to an end and where on our way back North.
Total of 25 fish between 3 of us for 3 days fishing. First day was modt productive then it seemed as the skies cleared and temperature rose the fish shutdown and we really had to work for them. A range of lures were used over the trip with all types taking fish.

Called in on Les Barlow on our way North. Highly recommended that to anyone passing through Stanthorpe. A true gentleman and character.

Poor old bugger is deaf as a post, I couldn't raise him, but could hear the radio blaring. Went round the back took a lure from the rack and left the money. Really sorry, would loved to have met him, maybe next time I pass.

He can tell a good story, and he has a lot because he's done a lot. But how could you resist with only  8? ....

Yes Tony, ever since then he tells me how he came in and saw a lure missing and money on the bench. As he has had a few "shop lifters", he is glad that there are still honest people around. And you do have to make sure you have his attention otherwise he doesn't hear you. I've  yelled his name out for over 20 minutes before he has heard me when I get there and he is inside his house.
