So something that has been a "bucket list" idea for me for a while is to make a timber lure with hand tools.
For some reason I started whittling today. I had intended to do tiger style lure around 3". The reason being, that a lot of the old makers started by knocking off the tigers. But I shrank it a bit - I decided to give this a crack to run for a shallow water flatty... Didn't take real long, even with no power tools. Used super glue to seal the timber, giving it a bit to dry out. Then I'll try to paint it. Although my daughter wants to paint it for me... We'll have to see. Hook hangers are screw eyes I pulled from an old yank lure. Bib is a bit of an old CD. Not shooting for longevity here, obviously. Then hopefully I find something dumb to eat it, and I can say job done and go back to buying lures the easy way...

NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
give it a test swim, see how it goes. then catch a fish, then kiss your fishing goodbye as the illness takes over and you become a lure making hermit. |

it's a start Ducks, but be careful, otherwise you'll get the fever of making them.
PS, pretty good for your first attempt

It swims. Tight little wiggle. Might need ballast or a heavier hook but pretty happy.
One fish then it (and I) can retire.

Give it a go Kimo.
I'm not especially handy - it was easier than I anticipated. I suspect a decent paint job is still being me though.

So... CDs don't make strong bibs once they are exposed to glue...
New bib from a broken laser pro. And the boss got her way and put some color on. |

I dread to think how people did this before lure lovers and YouTube... I've been watching masters at work for a long while leading up to this.

Totally missed this. A belated well done and sorry for your loss...
Been there before, all that effort to feed the lure gods. By the way Ducks congrats, you now have "lureivitus." The treatment is making lots of lures! |

I’ve lost many lures on their first swim. But to loose one that you made without catching a fish on its maiden voyage- that’s gotta hurt

If I knew I'd be so upset and angry about it, I would not have made it.
I went for a look this morning to see if I could retrieve it on a different tide but no good. Have to start again I suppose.

Martin- always with an apropos and somewhat setaceous quip. Gave me a good chuckle
Ducks- your comment "Cheers guys. I dread to think how people did this before lure lovers and YouTube... I've been watching masters at work for a long while leading up to this. " Rings true with me as well, standing on the shoulders of giants. Not a fan of this new digital age, but the knowledge at one's fingertips is a welcomed luxury. I would still pay good money to shadow or personally learn from any one of the guys on here. First hand experience beats digital stuff any day in my book. Let's hope you haven't been soured by the loss and will keep on quacking, err I mean cracking. Like to see the next attempt when you get round to it. |

Definitely a bit sour on the whole thing. It took me this long to make one, after all.
But looks like I'm off fishing in a week or so so maybe I'll try to sneak one more out... We'll see how busy I am with work...

If at first you don't succeed... Give up and drink beer?
And then attempt something smaller and fiddlier... If you're an idiot like me... So me being me, I thought I could probably catch something on a 40mm shallow Scorp-ish thing next weekend. These are fairly rushed so that Grace can get some colour on them before the weekend is out, then I can clear them and dry them before heading out Friday. Note to everyone - attempting to carve small scorpions by eye is a stupid idea and I thoroughly discourage it.
