The black and spotted bass are lutjanids - same as the mangrove jacks and fingermarks. That's why they look very similar and that's why they pull as hard. Lutjanids pull 5 times their weight, no wonder a 3o pounder is difficult to stop. I read an article about a bloke who had a 30 pounder swallowed whole by a bigger black bass right beside his boat. How big do these grow?

My nephew's go to lure for barra, and he smashes the coral trout on them whenever he gets out on the reefs.
