Since moving to Cooktown I've changed my preferences to a Ray Murphy mackerel lure in white and red head and an Illusion Lure 16 cm minnow deep in yellow.

During summer the same lures if the fish are deep or a number of various 11 / 12 cm lures including the Illusion lure wedgetail, Fugly Martin's minnow if the fish are running shallow.

you don't havta be pretty to fish

I know you guys love ya timber, but if ya want Spanish takes a lot to beat the old Halco Laser Pro or Crazy Deep in the Pink Crome
Trolled they seem to swim at the right depth and the flash that comes of them when they swim gets pretty close to that of bait, which means dinner to a mackerel
Have trolled 3 other lures out the back with them and the crome out fishes them 5 to 1
my bit

hello bob those lures were hard to make and needed a crimped towing eyelet or a round ridge on the bib using a pair of aviation shears to get them to swim , if you look at rapala magnums they do the same with a stainless steel bib , no bob dont have any left and nowdays i would  put this type of lure in the to hard basket for me, pearcey

My favourite's would be the Halco Laser Pro, in the red/orange colour with the black stripes in the shallow version first thing in the morning or as the day wears on the Rapala X rap 30 foot model.

Plastic is for storing lures, not making them.

i can remember making some urethane mackerel lures test models for david green in the early nineties fishing out of the gold coast seaway they had my typical v bottom shape but i think why they caught so many fish is that they had a polished aluminium bib that acted like a strope in the sunlight similar to a lot of the metal lures used for mackerel only with a blue and silver lure body like a pilchard , pearcey

There are quite a few good commercial hard bodied mackerel lures on the market & anyone who puts in the hours chasing mackerel would agree it's hard to go past a halco laser pro - just deadly Thumbs Up blue / silver or red head Wink

cheers
