Hi Kimo, I've used Oregon a few times and it is a nice timber! But the darker lines in the wood are much harder than the light stuff. When hand sanding, more material seems to be removed from the softer areas, giving the surface a corrugated look! It can be avoided by being very careful, but it is a challenge! Hope this helps...

Hi all
As you all know I know nothing about nor do I make lures. However I do enjoy browsing the knowledge displayed on this site.
More often than probably desired by most of you I have difficulty in just browsing and usually make a stupid comment such as the one I am about to ask.
I was cutting some perfectly good Oregon 5 x 2" timber yesterday, this came from a recently demolished house from the early 70`s I could not help but think that this timber might be suitable for timber lures???
It has nice grain and is a soft timber, I did not see it on the lists and wondered if there was a reason or if it was there and known by another name.
Cheers Kimo

Yes, just reminded me of my handy booklet "Queensland Building Timbers" also obtained from Qld Forestry Dept. Quite a lot of info, not all is relevant today, especially the timbers we like to use! Publication is dated 1965!Might have similar info to your old one Carl? Cheers Richard

Brad, there was a 50 (approx) sheet A4 binder style booklet I aquired from what used to be Qld Forestry ??
back in the mid 80's when I was in Cooktown, it's heading was Nomenclature and Lictus Densities of
Qld Timbers, that booklet had everything, must have passed it on when I sold up, pity.

I think I got that all correct LOL ???

Ted, samples???? I don't recall asking for samples Wacko but if you are offering.. 66
I was thinking of making a display board up for the Lure Expo with the same lure made in different timbers suitable for general luremaking.
I have these timbers on hand.
Red Cedar,
Mackay Cedar,
Spanish Cedar,
Silky Oak,
Yellow Cedar,
White Beech,
Camphor Laurel,
Houn Pine,
Karri Pine,
Surian,
Kuavalau,

would love some
White Cedar, Brown Beech, Cheesewood, and anything else that you guys might come up with.
A piece about 100mm x 25mm sq would be perfect.

Brad

Thanks Brad/ Chris, did not know Leather Wood came from Tassie, for some reason I thought it was Victorian, I would not have guessed it anyway LOL. Brad your discription is pretty close, it's fine and mid brown in colour and I know what you mean about the honey.
Thanks again.

Just a note on Pawlonia, Its grown in plantations in a few places on the Nsw North Coast. It is one of the few timbers that can be grown to a specific density within its possible range by a feeding regime.
Funny looking treeLOL They look like they should have pumpkins hanging off the branches

Pete, that wood Wink probably be LEATHERWOOD, Eucryphia lucida greatest honey in the world,,yum yum

as for luremaking...
Air Dry Density about 740 kg/m3
Leatherwood is very fine grained timber and known for its good workability and finish
leatherwood logs can produce a very attractive timber with a rich palette of colours from pinks through to browns; purple-heart logs contain the most figured wood, similar in appearance to black-heart sassafras.

i used some a while back that Abu Admiral sent me,it was fine to work with.the piece i had was very light but i think the density of cedars does tend to vary a bit, wear a mask if you sand this stuff as the dust will irritate the crap out of your snooterWink
