This is a shape I have not seen before. Believed it was called a Garfish.

Ian what is the length?
It is certainly a different shape. I have a couple similar but not identical. Thankyou for posting it up. |

I was given this lure by long time Cardwell resident and highly regarded sports fisherman, Don Porter.
I called in on Don last week. I said Mate, the authenticity of that moller garfish you gave me is being questioned. he smiled back 'I told you he didn't make many!'
He also gave me these special nudes, Eric only handed these out to a few close friends. These look like they were made out of gem stones! I think Cranky also has one of these.

Yep those nudes are sweet as, Ian any markings on the belly of the garfish? Have to say I'm leaning with Darren in thinking this is a Zangronde.

Here is the article that Don wrote. I know Don was a close friend of Eric and awarded him the first life membership of ANSA. I have no reason to doubt his word.

Ian, Bruce showed me a couple similar to the nudes you've posted. They are still in Eric's tackle box, they were carved from the root bole of red cedar, hence the unique scrolled effect of the grain. From memory also denser and heavier than standard cedar nudes.
Regards, Tony.

These 2 lures are the exact same shape, same bib angle and length, same placement of hook hangers and tow point, used a similar belly hook hanger. Only difference is that the belly hook hanger is not angled backwards.

Also the bibs are exactly the same as the bibs in my other Mollers, the top lure even has the start of a nick in the right place in the bib.

Martin, the bibs can be a bit misleading. From what I have been told, Eric predominantly used bibs made on a press which had a small defect that caused the "nick" in the bib. I may be wrong but I think one of the Townsville Fishing Club members had the press and lots of others besides Eric Moller ended up with the same bibs. Bruce Grandville, Keith Boys, Don Bailey are just a couple I know of. This just adds to the mystery of NQ Lures.

Yes I think it was Bruce Grandville that had the press, but it narrows it down to just a few makers. These are so very very close to the garfish of the original post.

Martin, these could possibly be by Westy Moller, he favoured this shape and naïve painting.

Martin, they sure look like the heavy tow wire setup Westy favoured. Take another look at the top, can you see where he's drilled right through from belly to the back? Will be an indentation that's been painted over. If so, I'd say fairly confidently they're by him.
I'll have the last two Westy Tiwi Tigers to sell at the Expo, let me know if you want to reserve one. Seaweed. |
