Hello all. I sent Gary (RAVA) some timber to make a couple of nudes. This is what he came up with. He did a fantastic job, showing off the grain beautifully, with a high gloss....which leads me to the question...Does anyone know what the timber is? I think it originally came from a Timber yard in Cairns that specialised in rarer timbers.
Hint - medium density, not that easy to carve when comparing to beech or red cedar. |

The timber is certainly very nice, distinctive well marked grain for sure. Lots of rain forest timbers in Cairns but i haven`t seen it before. I await with interest Darren. Cheers Richard

Not all the timber is this choice for grain. The majority is quite plain. Had to search to find a piece with nice grain and even then, Gary only had enough for these two. They turned out better than I expected.

This timber is a hardwood, comes from North QLD, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. Its main uses are in joinery, furniture and as a decorative veneer. Timber is Scarce.

Mick, you could be right, Kwila is normally darker, but that is result of aging after logging. If the tree were young enough and worked before it oxidises it can be lighter in colour.
Also known as Swamp mahogany in NQ. Brad |

Here is a pic of the dressed timber to help you. It machines and sands to a very fine finish due to the tight grain.

They are beautiful nudes. You did tell me what the timber was but it looks a lot different than what I expected. Great craftmanship by Gary. I love the shape of the smaller lure.
