Exellent info there Tony, thanks Travers. As yet I have not had a chance to have a read (too busy) but I am interested to see a couple of older stype shapes there which Barry should have picked up on too. The banana minnow shape the we haveBig smile

I look forward to going through the article in depth.

Brian,

I'm feeling as chuffed as you.Suspect I have a Big O Type shiny black with coloured spots

very similar to the one above.(Always wondered about this lure, seems too good for most amateurs)

Matches the template perfectly in my original magazine article, albeit slightly larger eyes.

Funny how even though I sent Lure Nut Rob a copy of the article  I never twigged I possibly

had one of the lures till Tony started this thread.

Cheers,Jim

Great article that Jim was so generous enough to initially copy and bring to my attention and Travers has made available for the site .... gotta feeling this set of lures may be fairly important in the Newell history going forward. Maybe time I framed them and preserved them for posterity.

Starting from the last page of the article in order:

Newell Big 'O' Type

Newell Guppy Type

Newell Chin-Minnow Type

Newell Banana-Minnow type

Newell Nilsmaster Type

Newell Rebel Type

Newell all 1983 Types

Hope you all enjoy and sorta brings the article to life Thumbs Up

Gday Rob

Awesome stuff, thank you for posting them up, I agree that it brings the article to life Clap

They have an aged look about them, are these blanks Peter made up, or were they made by someone else using the templates in the article?

Either way they are very cool Thumbs Up

I remember that article like it was yesterday!
My dad and I had a crack at making some of the patterns.
Here are a couple that I still have from back when I was a kid!
The bibs were made from tin can lids and the eyelets from split pins.
Dad and I made a few different patterns but these are the only 2 minnows I can seem to
still find, rusty bibs/eyelets and all! It was fun to do, and if I wasn't such a mad saltwater flyfisherman
who ties a bucket load of flies (and have done to a commercial level at times!) I would probably
still be making lures. I still may get back into it. I have a "want" to learn how to do resin head billfish lures too. Anyway, back to the Newell patterns....
The yellow one introduced me to what a jack attack was like........
It ripped the large, but only freshwater grade 2/0's completely off the lure.
Good times......hahahah!
Yes, Mr Newell's reach was pretty far and wide.
He certainly had an impact on me from a young age.

Thanks lads!
Considering I was 10 at the time, I think that the combined efforts of my enthusiasm
and dads patience, they came out well for first time lure makers.
They have a spot in among my collectible lures as part of my journey for the love of
all-things that are made to deceive fish.
But as a 10 year old, casting these around Jumpinpin, it was not hard to wish I was
somewhere more northern where the odds for something that would clout one of these lures
in the mangroves was much, much higher........

Hi
Just wondering how exactly do you get the scale effect on you lure??
I have tried a few various fabric mesh things but doesn't work that well.
Cheers

Mosquito netting, mesh laundry bags, onion bags etc. The key is to hold it tight against the lure while spraying, then removing it carefully without smudging. Just a light spray with silver auto acrylic will dry quickly.

As Ian stated, I use the fabric onion bags as opposed to the plastic. More easily wrapped around lure contours, also I don a glove while holding wrapped lure with left hand and spray can in right.
Trial and error, you'll work it out.
