The subject of big cod has prompted me to once again show my ignorance, however I am sure I can learn from here.
I grew up as a kid and threw all my teens never doing any fishing or having any interest or involvement in it
I grew up in Broken Hill NSW which was 70 mile from the Darling river. Most locals that fished, did so in this river and on recollection a good deal of it was done using illegal apparatus such as Drum Nets.
As a kid I remember being shown several very large cod which had been caught in the Darling River. Many years later in my early 20`s I saw 2 Large Murray Cod of around the same size 1.400 /1.500 metres long. One hanging in a tree, the other floating dead in the water downstream , both in the Murray River at Swan Reach.
These are the only cod I have ever had any contact with as I have never had any interest at this stage to fish them.
Over recent years I have consistently seem many pictures of captured cod, most still alive, All are green with the black spots or squiggle for want of another way to describe them, most of the larger ones appear to have large stomachs and are short.
The fish I remember were longer with more proportioned stomachs and the color was grey.
Questions : Am I stupid ?
Is this a different species ?
Or dose the fish loose all its color when it dies ? Can some one set me straight on this. I`m thinking the fish loses color after death and maybe the shorter fat bellied fish are just younger well fed fish ?
Cheers Kimo

A lot of variants kimo.

A dead fish will lose color for sure.
water color or clarity can change a fishes color.
dirty muddy western rivers, fish can be lighter in color, almost whitewashy yellowish with black grey markings.
Clear black tanin freshwater rivers/streams generally usually produces fish stunning green with black markings....
generally river fish will appear a bit more slender than dam caught fish as a rule....dam fish are generally lazy and have big guts....many variants same fish.

Nichos Maulers Homemade timber lures....THEY CATCH FISH!

YA DONT KNOW...IF YA DONT GO...SO GET OUT THERE AND... FISH IT
