Brett Campbell's very first lures look very primitive when compared to his later works of art - they are very much of a flatfish / Kadaitcha style and I wonder whether Brett's close friendship at this time with Peter Newell, gave him the inspiration for his very early luremaking ? These lures came directly from Brett and include the first and second lures that he ever made. It would be great to hear more of the story behind these early lures - one thing is for sure, they represent a very important part of the Brett Campbell lure making history A point of note, Brett's very first lures are readily distinguishable by the extremely large and thick hook hangers that he used, as can be seen in the pictures below. Everybody has to start somewhere and this is the start of the Brett Campbell lure making story 1st Brett Campbell Lure 2nd Brett Campbell Lure Cheers Rob |

At this same time Brett then started creating a number of different shapes that moved away from the flatfish / kadaitcha shaped lures. Here are some pictures of some of Brett's very first lures that are based on a square sided tear drop style, still with the ultra large hook hangers I am aware of another of this set in a Collection very close to Tenterfield - let's hope we get to see a picture of it. As with the very first set above, none of these lures were given model names. Cheers Rob

Not too far down the track Brett moved away from the large screw eyes and a number of slightly different shapes started to appear - these clearly show his early eye for creativity.
No model names as yet but the start of shapes so very reminiscent of future models. They still had that rough handmade style, but we are starting to see a move towards more finished and rounds edges Cheers Rob

The Goodooga top 12 which are posted elsewhere were probably the first indication that a genuine Bett Campbell Lure Model had arrived.
This first batch of 12 Goodoogas round out what could be called the 'Handmade era' of spray can painted bodies, hand touched eyes, rough sawn bodies and big eyelets. I hope that through this post, members may share other Campbell lures from this 'Handmade era' for the benefit of all Collectors Cheers Rob |

Those early lures of current makers really interest me. To see how far they have come and what was the influences for them to start is very interesting insight.

Rob, that's sensational that you were able to get those original lures. I wish I still had my very first lures.
I remember, a year or 2 after I moved to Tenterfield, when Brett came up to see Peter to find out how to make lures. He was a keen Cod bait fisherman, at the time, and the photos that he brought up to show us probably wouldn't be classed as 'acceptable', these days.
So, I reckon those first lures would probably have been made in about 1990/1991.
Brett's lure making and lure design skills quickly took off and I can remember Peter talking in glowing terms about Brett's lure design skills. That was about the time that he liinked up with Berkley.
Thanks for posting the photos, Rob. Would be good to get a bit of a written history.
Cheers

I think they may be a bit earlier than 90-91 Travers, as I supplied him with a machine in either late 91- or early 92 and his skill and workmanship was far beyond this level by then? Cheers Paul.

This is one of the most interesting threads I've seen. Glad you surfaced it Bob. The smaller teardrop shaped lure with the yellow body and green diamonds looks unreal. Thanks for posting Rob.
