The old timber lures have loads of character, slight variations and some are worth considerable dollars.....but what type of lures do you generally prefer to fish with?
Would you rather use a timber lure or plastic lure to catch a fish? |

I love using lures that mates have made- whether timber or molded. When it comes to actually catchability of wooden, solid molded, plastic lures - well there are some outstanding plastic lures that I think can be (and in many cases has been) matched by timber lures.
My brother in law uses a gold bomber 100% of the time when casting for barra. But I often match him, and at times outfish him using members timber and molded lures. But when it came to him using his bombers for mackeral, then he is worried about the strength of them where as I'll happily put a timber or molded lure in there.

Always timber for barra casting, the only exception I ever made was to use the Rattlin Rapallas in gold finish to jig thru snags.

I don't like losin works of art.
From the bank, in snaggy country, especially with the Boys, I'll use plastics, because retrieval is hard. When in a boat or Yak, retrieval is 'possible', I'll run with timbers. Losses happen, minimising impact is needed when $$$ are tight. Cheers MAL |

I always have used timber except when fishing shallow(bombers/b52's,now I use my own minnow).
I read somewhere that different timbers give off different vibrations and hence more attractive to fish. I have found for me the New Guinea Rosewood works well but other blokes swear by Red Cedar.Others fishing with the white beech found it great.I wondered if any other lure makers found this theory correct? cheers Jimbo |

This might seem strange coming from a old lure maker that hand carves wooden lures , but i have had great success with Mal Florences Bass Master lures, no longer made , me and Mal did quite a few trips to Wivenhoe Dam in the late nineties and they consistently caught big bass and some very large golden perch , plastic and very noisy rattle with a very tight action trolling depth about 10 feet, cheers pearcey

I love timber lures, by far my favorite, but if im working deep water that i dont know very well, or sometimew, just because im confident with the lure, ill use plastic scorpians and classics, also have no problem using plastic lures when I feel like changing lures a lot. These days, if im casting shallow lures, ill use my own barratroopers or Leads hi jackers most of the time, but I also use Barneys deep rivers, nilsies, a couple of maria angel kisses which are my favorite plastic hard bodies, Its crazy really, i take hundreds of lures with me, and use a handfull!
forgot i love the killalure barra baits, the origonal ones, also have a few of Richard Leess versions, which are better than the origional imo, as well as the 8ft plastic ones...oh, and manns...boof baits and stretch 20,s oh and bombers, and killa jews, and oh so many, so fish both timber and plastic....... oh god i love lures...... i have a problem..... |

Here's what I found, timber has many different qualities which are hard to mimic with lifeless plastic.
The ability to back up when confronted with an obstacle is a huge plus for an angler fishing heavy brush. Supposedly balsa has the best "bounce" when it comes to bumping into stumps, trees, rocks etc. Then comes wobble which is subjective of the timber. Many use balsa, again, for its lively action due to its light weight. Generally most here in the states use cedar. I remember Pete (Hazmail) saying that your aussie woods are more denser requiring less or no ballast. So the possibilities for lures are as endless as the timber available. Its a confidence thing with fisherman so whatever works best for you is what you should use. Lures just seem to work better when you believe they will catch you more fish |

It would hurt too much to lose a classic barra king, killa, leads, lee's, lionel white's, ray murphy's, or others, or even the discontinued moulded plastics that are hanging on my wall. For that reason I only use lures that can be replaced.
Guess that makes me a collector Tony. |

Any lure that works. I had a discussion with someone recently that just because a lure was timber didn't mean it was an outstanding fish catcher. I love the old Flicks Cobras but I also love Lucky Craft stuff. It's that diverse.

Interesting read here courtesy of the Bassdozer site in the USA
Classic Crankbaits
The last 7 years or so have seen a remarkable rediscovery of one
of bass fishing's oldest lures, the crankbait. You could fill a
good size library with what's been written about crankbaits over
the years, yet everyone is on such a crankbait surge, you'd think
they were invented yesterday. In a way, maybe they were. The
touring pros have found new and innovative ways to fish
crankbaits that only our grandfathers knew.

Great article Darb, it just shows again, there is nothing new under the sun--also shows how besotted the U.S market is with hero's. I think it's getting the same here, "Starlo" sneezes and we all go and buy a box of tissues.
Enjoyed it, thanks for posting. Pete |

Pete, I like reading about the US bass scene, just for ideas to try here. There is also some lessons to be learn't from that article that relate to our native fish, the clever anglers amongst us will have utilized them before, but some of the new guys might pick up on the tricks.

A similar discussion was had recently on another Bass forum so I have cut and paste my answer from there.
I am a strong believer in timber giving out a better 'sonic' sound. I have fished the same water/snags with mates way too many times using both my own and others timber made lures against mates $30+ plastic fantastic creations and would say that 8 out of 10 times timber produces better, sometimes a lot better. Saying that, at times plastic lures with rattles produce better on some days and always have a couple in the tacklebox when required. Yesterdays session produced a good number of decent fish on timber whilst the plastic vibe only accounted for smaller <30cm fish. It has been noted over the years when cottage industry makers have been forced into other lure materials such as urethane to meet demand which has not incorporated rattles and are an exact copy of the timber lures that they just don't seem to produce fish as well. When a lure is an exact copy and has the same buoyancy and other factors but does not result in the same number of fish you have to be thinking that the timber gives off a better 'feel/sound'. I think this is far more noticeable, well in my experience anyway, to apply to freshwater rather than the salt but apart from jew fishing I have had limited experience with salt fishing with lures to fish such as Barra. I would be curious to hear others thoughts on that. |

its odd you should mention the sound a lure makes Alistair and I have to agree ,a mate of has a stereo in his boat and always uses it when fishing on the Dams .He maintains that Bass are actually attracted to that awful techno music that you hear P platers playing so loud ,he put on some industrial heavy metal one time while we were trolling at somerset dam ,50 fish for the day (between two of us) and most were good fish.so much for stealth eh?

Was doing a night troll on a fresh water stretch of a popular river up here, my mate was slaying some nice barra , (in another boat)while we caught sfa, later after multiple lure changes, timber , plastic, deep, shallow, big ,small, I noticed a beer bottle in the side pocket on my mates side. Removed it, and started catching fish.....

Lol!
some kind of tretchery or sorcery! guess my point is, we give to much credit to the lure, when there are so many factors to consider.....like finding fish in the first place, then working out a way to catch them. |

Personally, I have a preference for using my own timber lures now that I am making a few, but before that I was using other peoples timber lures. There is enjoyment in catching a fish on a handmade lure made by a friend. Very rarely will a plastic lure get used these days...if ever. I like getting a few teeth marks in the lures to produce some nasty battle scars. It adds character to the lure and a big smile to my face.
Plastic lures done seem to have the same feeling. |

A mate asked me whether the sound is different to a timber lure or a plastic as it goes through the water. I said to him "you know how to tell where the level of water is in a water tank by bashing the side? It gives off a solid thud where the water level is compared to the hollow noise above it. This is the same to an extent with a timber or a solid resin lure."
So there is a difference even if only very minor.

Iv,e had better results in dams and creeks with timber but better results with plastics in salt, however i have a hard time using timber , As a collector sometimes you just don,t know what is going to be collectable ,So to be safe and unless i have doubles i just don,t fish them , Cheers peter.
