Here is another FNQ lure maker who lives in Malanda.
His name is Jack Edward Ruge and most of his lures have J.E.Ruge letter stamped in the underside of the bib.
Jack is 85 years old and was a very keen Barra fisherman.
As with most early barra fisherman he found good lures expensive and hard to come by so he started to make them when he was very young.
He started to make better quality lures in 1984 and made them till 2000. Family and friends were where most of his lures went to.
Jack played around with some different designs and sizes and never really named any of his shapes.
He cut them out with a jigsaw and a very small plane was then used to get the rough shape of the lure.
After that he used soley a spokeshave to get the lure to the sanding stage.
All sanding was done by hand. Tinsnips were used to cut the bibs out of alluminium. All painting was done with spraycans only.
I will add more info as I get it.
some twisted wires as well as splitpin type in a tray.
Alloy Templates.
The stamp for the bib
This is what Jack used with a corresponding piece of water pipe to concave his Alloy bibs.
A few of Jack's shapes.

Thank you Barry - you've done it again, what a great read, and photos to match!
It looks like Jack had it down to a fine art with his templates and equipment - quality lures and completely hand carved, they look very well finished. Classic hand carved Queensland lures, can't see too many of them! |

Cheers, Tony

Thanks Barry, I really ahve enjoyed reading all these 'Biographies' - They all show, there is nothing new under the sun, pretty amazing that Jack was making these 25 years ago, AND spraying them with a can .
