Hi everyone!
I'm a new member. I joined after Googling Carl Grist, Gristy, "C" lures..... I lived up in Cooktown from around 1981 to 1989. I left when I was 12 years old. I was (still am) a very keen fisherman and spent heaps of my time in "The Lure Shop" (and on the wharf) both when Carl was behind the counter and later when Peter Fooks was there. It didn't help when the shop was part of the Endeavour hotel complex..... my parents owned "Cargo Hold" the fruit and veggie/deli in the same complex. My mother, Sandra was always behind the counter. Temptation was always large when walking past the Lure Shop! There was one day I'd spent waaay too long choosing lures, probably annoyed Carl a little, when I went to pay Carl wasn't too sure about the blank cheque (signed) that my mother had given me. He sent me home to have her fill it in. When I got back he still wasn't happy and sent me back home to have it fixed. He did this a few times! By the end, the cheque was almost completely covered in corrections and my mother was getting peeved! I was also exhausted! wasn't the skinniest of kids and we lived at the top of Furneaux Street(in the school yard, Dad was the principal)! I did get a brace of Lures for my trouble though! I was cleaning out my tackle box on the weekend, which is what prompted me to Google Carl. I have three of his mid size lures and two of the small ones. All were purchased pre 1990. The larger ones perhaps even a few years earlier. Only one has the painted "C Lures" under the bib, the rest are stickers. One of the stickers has lost its words. I'm thinking of putting them up for sale. I'm not a collector or a good custodian.... I'll put some effort into getting good photos and put them on this forum soon. Running around for sick children at the moment, you've no idea how long this message has taken!! Love to forum by the way! Think I'll be spending a bit of time here! And Hi Carl/Gristy if you read this! Cheers, Justin Hammond |

Just for looks at the moment, will do a proper for sale later.
Here are the "C" lures. The larger, green netted lure is the one with the hand painted "C Lures" label. And have a couple of Norm Edwards as well. At least that's what they were sold to me as in Coen when en route to the Wenlock river in 1986-8ish. No sticker or label, so correct me if I'm wrong..... |
