Did the reel happen to reach the heights expected of it  when released in Aussie., in September 1972.

I think i have a version of that reel but never used it

A review done by Vic back in June 1972

John, my fishing mate bought one when they were released. A nice Barra reel and he still has it today. It worked well but a real mongrel to service!! Angry But, then again, most Penn reels were... LOL

That was my first baitcaster, I still have it and on occasions I still use it.
It cost me $98.00 when I was earning $38.00 per week so I had to pay it off.
I also caught my biggest bream on it which went over 3 1/2 pounds.

My Dad still uses his, still a nice reel after 30 plus years of work.
Yeah, they are a bit of a bugger to work on though.

Nice example John! Smile That flourescent Stren line was good stuff, you could track it right to the fish... I still have a couple of thousand metres of 15 lb.

I've put the old Stren line (maybe 35yrs old) on one of my retro Barra outfits. A Sportex/Penn Spinfisher combo that I hope to get a Barra on next season.. Wink

Ian, I enjoy putting the older gear through its pacers as well.

Especially the old DAM  and Abu reels.

I picked up 20 Lb Stren line on spools late 90's in a Toy shop in Stanthorpe .

He was moving out of the small amount of fishing gear that he sold at reduced prices.

Had quite a few wooden lures  ,reduced, did  not mean a thing to me at the time.

I often wondered how many Newell lures were amongst them at the time.

What is the length of the rod and what type of eyes on it.

Came across some of the old Amilan line from Japan that was very popular in the 60's.

It'a 7' Sportex "Grizzly" and has the standard "Varmac" metal guides, should be fun with a big Barra bouncing on the end!! LOL I have a 5,000 yd commercial spool of Stren! Plenty there to spool up a few reels...

No Bill, it's a generic Asian copy (probably Daiwa) that we used a lot in the 70's while on execise in the NT (and caught a lot of barra on) I have a few genuine Killers that I may use! Star
