Chaps,
Just thought I would pop in and share something I have been working on for the past 6 months. Not able to spend too much time on luring or this forum at the moment due to other commitments but when I do get a chance I have been working on these. Trying to get them ready for real world testing on an upcoming Barra trip. No paint yet, not sure whether I will have the time for that. They might end up with just eye's and some tail markings. The smaller lure is 125mm and the larger 150mm. Both designed in CAD and then 3D printed. Both have moving weight system for better casting and rattles. Hook eyelets are my own design to improve overall strength of the lure. Both will slowly float when completed and dive to about 1m. Angus

A bloke at work built his own 3D printer 18 months ago, I gave him one of my lures to copy to see if there was a difference in action between wood and plastic. I havn't seen that lure since.
Aldi has advertised a 3D printer due in store - yesterday for $499 and plastic filaments spools at $35. Looks like each 6 inch lure would use a whole spool - that would make it expensive for each lure.

Thanks guys, time will tell.
Martin, from memory there was 1Kg plastic on each one of those spools, the weight of those lures is about 20g each, you can get about 50 per spool of filament. Angus

Just saw an advert from a hardware store - spools at $14 each.
The lure I was referring to was a 6 inch lure I gave this bloke at work. He told me that he would only get 2 of these lures per spool that he was buying at that stage.

A quick spray of white on some of them and you'll have all the colours you need
Looking good

Martin, that seems like a good price, 3D printing is like all things, so much variety out there.
Tony, that is what I am hoping, wont have time to be very fancy, thinking white, white with red head and black with colored tails . Keep it simple. Angus

Hi All,
Just thought would chip in with some things to watch out for when it comes to 3d printers and filament : 1. Avoid the cheap filament - what you find with a lot of cheaper rolls is that the filament diameter although stated as 1.75mm can actually vary anywhere from 1.72 to 1.80mm in diameter throughout the length of the spool. As your print results rely greatly on speed of travel verses speed of plastic extrusion, this calculation is based on the filament be at a set diameter so any variation will greatly affect your printing capabilities and totally does your head in - Buy a set of calipers and measure your filament in a few places ( every 10cm ), work out the mean average and this is what you set your filament diameter to in your software program - massive difference to quality and significantly less swearing involved. If it doesn't cost $30 a spool for white filament then be very cautious. 2. Use more than one type of software for your prints, I sometimes combine Rhino, blender, autocad and cinema 4d all for different aspects of the one print - but Cinema 4d is used for 99% of my prints. 3. Different slicer software will also give you more actual printing options like breakaway supports which enable you to print some really difficult parts without the frustrating moments. You can also select different types of RAFT bases which enable you to get better adhesion to the build plate, which in turn means you can print some objects on their end instead of being restricted to printing them on their side. 4. If looking to get a printer, ensure you get one with a heated build plate, and 0.4 nozzle. Also try to avoid printers that rely on licensed software as it really limits your designing capabilities and the same applies for printers that will only use their branded filament as it turns out to be extremely expensive. 5. Ambient air temperature / moisture content will also have a significant impact on your prints, so adjust heat settings accordingly and note ABS filament really absorbs the moisture so printing when there is a lot of moisture in the air will sometimes create those What The Hell moments when a print has worked previously and now the same print fails, time and time again. 6. I usually print all my designs at 0.2 micron and only 10 to 15 % infill. This saves you wasting a lot of filament on a design that once completed, your not really happy with, plus it enables you to reduce printing time from hours down to minutes depending on the size of your print. 10% infill is more than sufficient strength wise for testing purposes, think the highest I have ever used was 20% and that was because the item printed was the size of a 5 cent piece with lots of detail. Anyway just thought would try and be helpful, and feel free to post or pm any questions you may have. Will state up front I am no printing expert, but have been doing this for few years now and may be able to help eliminate some of the frustrating aspects for those new to this type of lure designing.
