I'm the first to admit I have a little dose of trout fever at the moment. I had today free, so a trek into some stunning trout country was really the only sensible thing to do. The place supported a healthy population of beautifully marked rainbows that were carefully handled and released. Places like this are becoming rarer and rarer so it was a great little find. I managed 6 larger fish, along with a few smaller ones as well.
Cheers, Danny. |

Thanks fellas.
Yeah Rod I really enjoy chasing them too. They're potentially a destructive addition to any mountain stream however just about everything seems to be on the slow decline these days, so I don't see any real issues preserving them in their habitat for another encounter. Kimo, Chris and P.J. it is was a stunning little stretch of water. The bigger fish were sitting in the tiniest little pressure change areas behind rocks etc - some spots no larger than a football. Chris I agree. I really enjoy the randomness of what might be around the next bend - a pool, another little patch of faster water with lots of slippery stones, some undercut bank with overhanging tussocks. Who knows? Cheers, Danny. |

Thanks Shane, John and Brad. It's just the camera on my phone. I need to get my good one fixed. I think it could take some top stuff with fish and scenery like that.
John - my mate has had a good look on google earth and he's found some more amazing looking water. I'm taking the 7' 3wt next trip. Very keen to nymph the little pockets where they were consistently sitting. Cheers, Danny. |

Me too P.J.
Good to hear Cliff - do you usually run a 4wt line with your little 3wt? I'm doing that and I'm happy with how it casts. The rainbows above went absolutely ballistic on light spin gear. Lots of flips and runs up and down the stream. Great fun. Cheers, Danny. |

Yes I use a "standard" WF 4# to load the rod in close. A 3# line with shorter heavier head ( Rio grand or similar) will also work well on the little streams. I also tie up shorter and stiffer leaders to turn over the bigger drys that I tend to use. Cheers

It had been too long since I'd been back to this little stream, so I left study early yesterday and drove out into the hills on a balmy clear afternoon. There were plenty of nice little rainbows around, and it was a privilage to see Murray Crays hanging off large boulders in the middle of the flow. The highlight was this nice brown. It did have two juvenile Murray Crays in its stomach though. Ahh trout.....the fish that you hate to love.
Cheers, Danny. |

Yeah Chris it was a beautiful fish. I'm torn at the moment - I have no problems taking trout to eat from a stocked reservoir, but it's a tougher one when little wild populations in streams are involved. I feel from an ecological perspective that's it's actually irresponsible of me to return a large invasive apex predator like that to a delicate stream that's harbouring numerous endangered native fauna. On the other hand I'm ridding a popular catch and release angling species that a lot of trout purists would bend over backwards to see released back carefully into the stream. It's an interesting debate.
Cheers, Danny. |

Here we have problem with rainbow trout (allochthonous species). There is less domestic brown trout in our streams and rivers. For me its hard to kill or eat a fish , but on the other hand we have problem
because pushes domestic trout... |

Hi Slaven.
Thanks for the insight into the term "allochthonous." It's a word we don't use much here but perfectly suitable for our introduced species. I too do not like killing fish. At all. But I have more issues with buying fish, because I know deep down that if it wasn't farmed then there's a chance a lot of other bycatch died for me to eat that one meal. I also struggle with the dilemma of catch and release of native fish because the more I understand about them the more I don't want to potentially damage them just for my enjoyment. So I don't remove any cod from the water that I catch and especially don't fish in rivers while they are trying to breed. I have no problems catching and eating an introduced species that is either stocked or potentially causing damage to our ecosystem biodiversity in Australia. That would be Redfin and Trout. Delicious. Cheers, Danny. |

Hi John.
Thanks. Yes it was great to see them. Although if they and other crays are predated on by trout (I'm assuming what I found in the trout''s stomach were either Murray Crays or another spiny cray species) they may not last there forever. Cheers, Danny. |

Went out to my new favourite little stream again at dawn this morning. We trekked into some new country and found some more pretty little rainbows.
Below is the reason you always have to watch where you step. Picked up this beautiful little Mountain Katydid on the road when unlocking the hubs. Stunning colours on this female. Cheers, Danny. |

Yeah Martin it was pretty funny. Phil nearly stepped on it. He got some air time getting out of the way. Pretty hard not to roll around laughing.

Nice Danny! I cut my teeth fishing small streams like that as a kid, so I know the pleasure well. I feel your dilemma re: taking fish or not, but like you I find it hard to go past reddies or trout for a feed and helping out the environment at the same time. Still to try a carp one day, brined and smoked from clear water is supposed to be very nice.
Love the creatures and environment that you get to see as well, always makes a trip even better. Haven't seen a coloured katydid like that one, only the blackies. Steve

Thanks Steve. Yeah there's some awesome stuff just waiting to be found. Especially in places that take a little more effort to get to. The females are flightless so I think this colouring is one of their predator avoidance strategies. Unsure if the males have the same colouring under their wings. Never been close enough to one to see. Awesome little creatures.
Cheers, Danny. |
