Had an idea the other day ...so I grabbed a couple of pieces of old oregon and ran up these three...as you can see they are asymmetrical about the horizontal plane with a round section on top and a flat belly under..excitement was building so a quick coat of clear and a few fittings .
Down at the water it performed beautifully running at around 2.5m and plenty of shake in the booty... will finish the others as they have a slightly different shape and length .. hope they are just as successful... if so I will build on the idea as I enjoy the lathe work

I often use Oregon, but saying that it has to be very old as the newer stuff does not have the fine straight grain I like.
Another timber I use a lot of is jacaranda it also has a nice fine grain and is very light and strong as you can see by these thin stemmed mushrooms I make.

Those mushies look good. Is the dark rim on the edge of the mushroom is the inner bark as it's turned up from a thin branch?

Martin it is the bark straight off the tree.i usually cut the jacaranda into say 200mm lengths and let it dry for 6 to 8 weeks before turning
