Found this in second edition Outdoor and Fishing April 1948

To the old sea salts on the site is this method still used/ appropriate in todays boating

Would , could , or have you used it in todays boating. Certainly some anchor designs have changed  in that time.

Regards John

John, a similar method still in use these days, Most anchors will have a hole somewhere near the 'bum end', on sand anchors most have a hole through the drag plate above the pivot, most plows will have a loop above the swivel, and reef anchors usually have a loop or hole at the forked end. instead of attaching the anchor chain to the usual end of the stock, run the chain down the stock/sank and D shackle the chain to this alternative hole/loop. Use gal tie wire or  a couple if "GOOD" zip ties to attach the chain (no slack) to the normal attachment spot.
Then when/if the anchor fouls and cant be raised. take all the slack out of the anchor line and slowly drive the boat forward at a shallow angle offset to the anchor, the zip ties/tie wire will part and the anchor can be pulled out backwards.

Will check when this rain lifts and see if i can convert mine  to avoid future trouble .

Your diagram is a big help and appears easy to implement.

I do not remember having the hole at the bumb end of the anchor , if not will drill a suitable one.

if you use a slip-ring anchor you'll have no problem, mud sand or rock. if the anchor becomes stuck, slowly drive back over it and the ring slides back up the shank and pulls the anchor backwards. never had a problem, been stuck lots , used this type of anchor as far back as i can remember.......mick

I hate anchoring and that was using the zip tie method. Best thing I did was fit a big electric motor to the 6mt boat linked to the Gps. Never have to anchor and never need to waste time to sit on top of the mark.
