While fishing around the Conflict Islands recently there were many great spots to target Coral Trout on Poppers.
I am not sure they had seen too many poppers in the past as the Trout were thick were extremely keen to commit suicide.Note the parallel runs of coral with sandy gutters beside them. These types of topography are great for targeting Trout.

The fish live in under ledges a lot and darken up to suit. When they come flying out to eat the popper they can change colour a bit like a lot of fish however they generally show up as a reddish/brown colour and quite contrasting in the sandy channels.

Also george the deeper they go the brighter they get
the trout I used to fish for on the swains varied between depths .
Generally green like above in shallow water
10+mts would be orange/pink below...dark brown/red top
20mts plus to 50mts+ bright orange...strawberry color.
At times they can be like patchwork in a mix of all colors above..(like camo)..We used to call them army trout.
The ones from the shallows can be almost  off white if theres a lot of sand around.(like above)
Ive seen 2 pure white ( true Albinos) from about 35mts of water amazing to look at with pink eyes...very  rare....these dont change color they are snow white...... one went to the Taxidermist, and was on display in a tackle shop in noosa for years will try and find it for a picture.

Yep, still have it Barry, took it to PNG and Fiji years ago - everybody else was using ugly stiks but soon wanted a lend of it.  Used it last year chucking big plastics for jewies though I keep the braid light as worried the blank might go bang!   Folks are down here this year - with any luck we'll catch a few bass if the weather improves, but not the sort of bass you've been catching though!   Any footballers or lunar trout show up on the trip?
Regards Peter Mack.

Great fish, can't get over the water clarity and colour.

Great pics and learnt something on where to target them.
