Hi all,
Where is a good spot to search for collectable lures (no doubt it is here)where do i look and what do i look for,
Pretty broad questions i know, i have been looking for the original (timber) RMG lures but do not really know what else to look for,
Thanks in advance,
Garry

With a fat wallet - ebay. With a skinny wallet but with time and willingness to do the yards- weekend garage sales.

Garry, depending on which state Lilydale is located? This will influence your yard-sale success, Alistairs advice is sound, but if your looking for barra style lures it will need to be in FNQ or the N.T.
If bass/cod style collectables you're after, it would need to be from mid N.S.W upwards. Anywhere else you will be struggling, there are a couple of original timber R.M.G.'s on Ebay at the moment, under vintage/fishing/lures, but you will need to have deep pockets. Welcome to LL's, hope you have fun in your search. Regards, Tony.

Do not believe eBay for a price gauge on all collectable lures !
This is always a heated disagreement from people. Buyer be very very aware ! Well come and good luck with your collecting, do not hesitate to ask for help on a lure.

It’s now 2020, and things have changed .... all you have to do now is sit on your a**e, join every Facebook Sell, Swap and Buy page in the country, post a picture of a fistful of pineapples constantly, ..... and wait for the goodies to roll in .
Don’t forget to compile a list of reasons you can use to repeatedly show off your newly acquired booty on multiple lure collecting pages .

Why Mick are are you being sarcastic?!,.its true though. Not a lure collector myself but i know theres still bargains to be had at garage sales ,flea markets and second hand shops.A lot of the collectors are decent people willing to trade and help out people who are new to lures too.Beware though as there are some who are not so decent

I can remember when ‘ Can I get some info on this lure please ‘? meant the maker, age etc. Nowadays it’s all about’ what’s it worth’ or ‘ what are these fetching atm ‘ or ‘ not for sale , but can I get a valuation ‘? ....... and I’m not talking about the newbies, rather the investors that have been around for a while and need to know exactly how much they just ripped that old fella off for his old lures . Sign of the times ..... these blokes must get a lot of lure pics sent to them , yet you never see them posting up any info about newly discovered makers and the like ...... |

I fell into lure collecting over the years by simply buying more lures than I lost for particular trips. I bought lures that I liked, chosen for the job in hand and it turns out, much later, that some of those survivors have become "collectable". To me that is the accidental but easy way into becoming a lure collector. I agree with those who don't like or wish to see lure collecting become principally a commercial enterprise. I really can't bring myself to sell any of my lures, even where they have exponentially increased in value. I have done the odd trade with members here but have kept my overall lure numbers pretty much in check by trying to fish most things and by giving away some of the special lures to a planned fishing/lure museum. Regards, Ken.

some things never change,
if we stopped looking so much into it, trying to find the wrongs, but concentrated more on the positive and fished and/or collected lures that meant something to us, for whatever simple reason that may be,how much better would the fishing/ collecting world be? rather than trying to out do everybody, and judging everyone. I make lures, i fish lures, i "GATHER" lures (Gather.. my preference on the word "Collect") the lures i like to GATHER are not high end old collectable lures as such! I prefer..current makers, people i respect, people ive become friends with, people that make lures for all the right reasons..No 1 reason...to fish, they fish them. they work well and they have pride in what they do..to me..thats what its all about. If someone is a tosser, they make stuff that looks great but is useless, to me if their lures were selling for 30 bucks but i could get them for 5. i would not even buy them to profit.. they could not even gift them to me. its about morals, good memories, relationships and future good times for me... not so much the $ its an interesting ride. I guess I’m one of the ones Mick is talking about, I get up 5-6 on a Saturday or Sunday morning and spend 5-6 hours posting adds while most other people are having a sleep in. I see a lot of Crap lures and sometimes some nice ones and if I’m lucky I get to buy a few as reward for my effort. Some weekends you get nothing at all and some weekends you get a fair few. I can honestly say though that the goodies don’t just come rolling in on there own, you get rewarded for your effort. As far as showing off your newly acquired booty goes isn’t that where site like this started people coming together to show the lures they collect and as part of this showing lures that are new to there collections. I post some of my better finds on here in an effort to try and keep the interest up in this site lately l have noticed that not many other people make an effort to do so. The other reason is so people can see that there are still a lot of nice old lures out there but you just have to make an effort to find them because they won’t find themselves. Also if it wasn’t for people like me making the effort there would be a lot less lures going to other collectors as well.

Yep I agree, Facebook groups have wrecked lure collecting, I'm over these selected few buying all lures on buy sell swap groups all over Australia.. Everyday I question myself why I have hundreds of collectible lures sitting in Cabinets, Although I have bought two collectible lures in the last three months, these days I prefer to buy from the current crop of makers and fish them. I'm over the whole scene, selling soon and stick to buying quality Aussie Made lures for fishing. |

Finally hit a local garage sale with "alot of fishing gear". Thought f*@k yeah thank the fish gods.
Turns out it was alot of spear fishing stuff. A broken reel and a 10L bucket of soft plastics all mushed together. Also the standard kettle One day I'll strike gold. Might have to pay Chris or Ollie a visit and pretend it's a garage sale

That goes for many of us Nicho. You and Chris put in words how a lot of us approach collecting. The die hard collectors would faint if they knew what's in my tackle boxes to use. But I always have a small selection from people that I like and respect - if I have enough of them. In the case of my Powers all of mine are in my "to use" tackle boxes because I only have 2 of them.
