    Posted: 10 Nov 2009 at 5:24pm
Barra King lures were originally made by Henry and Aileen Hall.

Henry started selling the lures commercially in 1981 under the brand "Barra King", prior to this Henry had made lures and sold them as "Hall Lures"

Henry's design for the Barra King lures was inspired by Eric Moller's lures after Eric had retired from making lures. Henry added his own style "Coffin Shaped" bibs to the lures, and made the pupil in the eyes of the lures point towards the front.

The original Barra King lures had no sticker or writing under the bib, and the majority of the lures had white eyes, although a few had yellow eyes.

All of the machinery to make the lures was engineered and built by Henry including the lathe, jig to drill holes for hook hangers and cut slot for the bib, and press to make the bibs.

Henry retired from making the Barra King lures in 1986 due to an allergy to the araldite used to glue in the bibs, and sold the business to Ron and Joe Dau.

Here's a few of Henry's creations, including both shallow and deep diver versions.

These are one of my favourite lures to collect, I'd love to hear from anyone who has any they are willing to part with!

Cheers, Tony

Here's a couple of cards for the early Barra Kings

Not many of the cards exist as I imagine many cards were returned by fishermen to enter the competition to win 6 more Barra King lures!

Henry's lathe is a work of art in itself!

Man that machine is something, no vibration here, check out those bearing caps, washing machine motor, and that gruesome cutting tool - looks like it worked and anyone who can build these machines out of nothing deserves lots of respect.
Love this stuff, nice lures too, and thanks all for posting.
